| I'd love to add more posts here, as I am a hardcore reader. In 2007 I wrote on a calendar how many pages I read that day; at exactly one year, I averaged 80 pages/day. Sadly, I am slowed, massively. My ability to focus went awol. And my hands shake. Grrrrr. I've been on disability for 10 years. All my life, I put music on and read books. I didn't and still don't watch TV, except NFL and NHL. I'd be happy if I could read normally and listen to music all day; and fill this topic. | |

That's about what I used to average myself. There was a time I could read two hundred pages a day thanks to a job I used to have with lots of down time. Not sure why I don't still do that, but somewhere down the line I just never get a chance to sit down and read anymore. Even if I go to bed early I end up reading ten pages and falling asleep. Really is annoying because there are a ton of books I wanna read and re-read.

Do you have fave writers or genres?
My favorite genre would be fantasy or sci-fi, with horror right up there with them. My all time favorite author is JRR Tolkien. Clive Barker would be another, though except for his Abbarat books, he hasn't done much lately that I've cared for. Dan Simmons is another great author, that I really like. Steven Brust is always a fun read. You should check out his stuff if you haven't already and you're a fan of fantasy books. His Vlad Taltos series is really good. Lots of books in there though, but they are all around the 220 page Mark.

Dan Simmons is wonderful - I like the Terror. Clive Barker is also extraordinary - my faves are Weaveworld and Imajica. I became a literary snob awhile ago, so my fave writers: Hemingway, Steinbeck, Updike, Bukowski.... a very long list. But the only genres I don't care to read: romance, chick lit, young adult, classics (Homer, not Pearl Buck), westerns, and most Philip K. Dick. In grade 7, I had an English teacher from Scotland. Her accent was just lovely. She picked a book for the class to read: out loud in class, as homework, and she always read to our class. The book was The Hobbit; and if I wasn't already a book worm, I certainly became one. Awesome, life-changing event for a young boy!

Awesome, life-changing event for a young boy!
The Hobbit was the first book I chose to read that wasn't school related. I hated reading when in school, because most of the stuff they had us read was boring to me. After I read the Hobbit, I was hooked on fantasy books. It's all I ever read until I discovered Clive Barker. I branched out, but my favorite is probably still fantasy books. And yes, Dan Simmons is great. Haven't read all his stuff, but did read The Terror, and loved it also. You know they made a tv series out of it don't you? It's probably almost done, but it's on AMC every week. I haven't watched it yet, just have them all on my dvr so I can binge watch it one of these days. If you like sci-fi, you should read his Hyperion/Endymion series. That series blew me away, and it's one I need to re-read again one day soon.

It's amazing that he wrote it in a second (or third?) language. It's such a nuanced piece of writing. On my trek through classic literature, I'm currently reading a translation of Flaubert's Madame Bovary.

What did you think? I couldn't believe how good/funny/witty it was, considering the era it was written in. - nevermore wrote:

Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee. Finally getting around to reading this. What did you think? Haven't attempted it yet. Lovecraft Country - Matt Ruff Interesting take on Lovecraftian themes, set in the Jim Crow era, with Black protagonists. Very well done. If you like Sci-Fi, give it a shot.
