One of my most anticipated albums of 2013! Absolutely love this band.
Quote :
Danish metal rock 'n' rollers VOLBEAT will release their fifth album, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies", on April 9 (one day earlier internationally) via Spinefarm/Universal Music.
The first in a series of video reports featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the CD can be seen below.
Former ANTHRAX guitarist Rob Caggiano earlier in the month joined VOLBEAT. Caggiano served as producer on "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" alongside longtime production partner Jacob Hansen, who produced and mixed the band's prior four albums. Caggiano's other producer credits include THE DAMNED THINGS, BLEEDING THROUGH and ANTHRAX, and he was a member of ANTHRAX for two tenures — from 2001 to 2005 and again from 2007 to 2013.
Speaking to U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine, VOLBEAT singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen stated about Caggiano's addition to the band and the upcoming CD: "When you get to the point in your career where you're making a number of albums, I don't really see the point in putting out the same record twice. So I felt it was time to change some of our habits, because in the past we've tended to work in the same way, at producer Jacob Hansen's studio… So this time around, we've come to PUK studios in Denmark and Rob Caggiano has become involved, working alongside Jacob. The result is a new sound for VOLBEAT, a new vibe, although that's not to say the songs aren't still typical of what we are known for; it's still 100 percent VOLBEAT, but everything has been taken to a higher degree, and I can honestly say I've never heard the band playing so well. Everyone has been truly inspired by the new surroundings and the new team — so much so that I've even re-written some of the songs in the studio; there were so many great ideas flying around, that it made me want to push myself even harder… and the recordings are sounding great. Nothing is mixed yet, but it's really strong already, so my main concern is that whoever mixes the record doesn't F*ck it up! Having said that, we just heard a test mix from Chris Lord-Alge — it was amazing, so he's now confirmed to mix the whole thing."
He continued: "I know everyone says this, but this IS the best album VOLBEAT has recorded — at least until the next one! I set myself a number of goals for this record, and all of them have been achieved, so I couldn't be happier, and having Rob on board has really worked out well.
"You know, I was really impressed with the sound of the new ANTHRAX album, which he worked on, so we discussed maybe working together in the studio on a couple of songs, but it's now gone way further than that! Rob really knows what he's doing…
"One of the things I'm most happy about this time is the contrast in the material, the range of the music; on the one side, you have the western motifs, the rockabilly/country songs, and the real emotional melodies, and on the other, some of the heaviest — actually, THE heaviest — songs we have ever recorded. There was a record company guy in the studio the other day, and he was absolutely blown away by the ultra-heavy stuff. He said he wasn't even sure he was listening to VOLBEAT! [laughs]"
VOLBEAT will embark on a North American headlining tour in the spring. The trek, which will feature support from DANKO JONES, will kick off on March 6 in Dallas, Texas.

SWEET!! I was hoping that Hank Sherman had stuck around as he toured with them but Rob will do nicely as well. This is one of the few releases that I am excited for this year.

I have tried to like this band and even have The Strength/The Sound/The Songs but there's just something "off" about them for me. Definitely talented but the music just doesn't click for some reason.

I have tried to like them, they sort of remind me of Social D at times and I really like them but Vbeat loses my interest.

I can totally see how either their melding of styles of the singer's voice could be a turn-off for a lot of people.

One of my fave bands. Can't wait for this album! ONe of my most anticipated discs of the year, along with the new Pretty Maids and the new Deep Purple. The new Saxon already delivered and is a killer disc.

I agree, Social Distortion is my hands down favorite band, and Volbeat wear their influences on their sleeves. More power to them though, Volbeat have a great sound that is pretty unique in the style blend, but for me it really clicks. Great band.

I don't know how or why Volbeat flew under the radar with me for so long. I've been a fan of Social D (and rockabilly/Elvis/whatever else they throw in there) for a long time and these guys shoulda been a no brainer from day one. But for whatever reason, I didn't get their albums till just about a year ago.
I'm looking forward to this new release. Bring it on!!

Ditto. I think my avoidance factor stemmed from the fact that the people that recommended them to me are big indie/alternative/modern rock fans. None of which are genre's that I am overly fond of.

Because you never listen to me.
Probably. One too many "It's killer" reviews pushed it out of sight, out of mind.

Listen, I spend all day being creative with my writing. When I talk music, I get back to the basics. Haha.
And for the record, Volbeat is killer.

Eh.
I'm sure this is nice for radio, and it's not a bad song, but this isn't the kind of song that really makes these guys shine. They're best when they mixing heavy metal in with this sort of tune. Alone, it's just okay but kinda boring.

Eww, not a very good choice for a lead-off single. Pretty weak. That's more of a 2nd or 3rd single release. Hope that's not indicitive of the whole album.
Let's all blame the new guy. Way to go Rob!!

Here's the official video...
It's getting a little better the more times I hear it, but I'm still not convinced it's the best song for a lead-off single.
Oh, and here's the track listing...
Outlaw Gentleman & Shady Ladies 01. Let’s Shake Some Dust 02. Pearl Heart 03. The Nameless One 04. Dead But Rising 05. Cape Of Our Hero 06. Room 24 (feat. King Diamond) 07. The Hangman’s Body Count 08. My Body (YOUNG THE GIANT cover) 09. Lola Montez 10. Black Bart 11. The Lonesome Rider (feat. Sarah Blackwood) 12. The Sinner Is You 13. Doc Holliday 14. Our Loved Ones
King Diamond makes an appearance? Neat-o!!

Yeah, definitely not lead-off single material. Let's hope it's just the most radio-friendly tune on the album.
You guys are nuts I've only listened to a few minutes of the song and I like it. They do so many different styles so it sounds fine to me. catchy, I think. Only thing I don't like is that guitar sound in the beginning.

It's a perfectly fine song. They have many just like it, and those are fine, too. They are, however, my least favorite kind of song by them.

I agree! I like that song a lot.
But then I'm all about memorability when it comes to my music. You guys can keep your "quirkiness"; I like songs that become instantly memorable and for me this one qualifies. I'd actually buy the album if the rest sounds like the single.

I like it a little better than I did the first time I heard it, but I'm still not convinced it's the best song to release as a premier for the new record. I'm hoping there are stronger tracks on the album. Which I will purchase regardless of this one song.
