I don't about where you lived, but in my neighborhood (just about) everyone had a copy pf "Hair Of The Dog" in 1975
The album went double platinum. It was still widely known in the early 80s, the title track and Miss Misery were played all the time on DC101, Love Hurts was a staple at every junior high & high school dance. Not in the least bit under-appreciated.

I would love to see what that exact same author would say in 1993 on the exact same topic. But, for 1983, the dude [assuming...] was pretty right on. Personally, I would have thrown Sad Wings of Destiny on there. Still, to this day, fairly underrated.
I would agree that in 1983 Sad Wings was underrated. Not so much anymore.

I'd have this in there, should have been huge, absolutely no doubt.

Yeah - Hair of the Dog was huge. But, that is pretty much it. Razamanaz, Expect No Mercy, umm, Rampant [can't immediately remember the rest] got little to no play in the States. Nazareth was considered a one [album] hit wonder here.

I don't have any of those albums. I don't think I have a single song from any of those albums either, except maybe the More album. I'm not that fond of Queen. Too theatrical for my tastes. I hear "Jailbreak" on the radio a lot. I don't care for it mainly because of a commercial a long time ago that had a bunch of dogs running out to that song. I can't even remember what the commercial was for, but I thought it was stupid. Every time I hear that song I think of that commercial.
Now I have a song by More called "Depression." I like it so much it made my favorite NWOBHM list I posted on this forum a while back. It's off Warhead and I think that is what they mean (they didn't have a self-titled album) because their only other full-length album came out in 1982 and that probably wouldn't be enough time in 1983 to judge how it was received.

Same here....
I've never even heard of More
not that interested in The Runaways.

In 1983 I had never even heard of great early heavy rock bands like Budgie, Atomic Rooster, Lucifer's Friend, Dust, Captain Beyond, etc.
Personally I think some of those bands could have used some press if the discussion of "forgotten" heavy albums was brought up.

I'd add Girlschool's Demolition and Hit & Run. Also Holocaust's The Nightcomers.

Dust should definitely be on the list.
I'm going to add T. Rex too. Not sure which album. Obviously, "Get it On" gets tons of airplay, but that's it. I don't know about in 1983 though. But T. Rex should be standard issue.

Somehow "neglected" became "obscure"
Back to what Shawn said:

I had albums by all of them in 1983 but rarely listened to them and didn't appreciate them till way later. An album I did appreciate then, but alot of people overlooked or better yet had forgotten was "heavy rock super-group" Beck, Bogert and Appice.

I'm gonna throw in that other Ronnie Montrose band: Gamma-1 (1979) Gamma-2 (1980) Montrose is definitely the better album, but I think these are very underrated.

Good call on those Gamma records. Very underrated.
Two more I thought of
Witchfynde - Cloak And Dagger
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty

Everyone should own the Montrose album. It holds up great today for an album recorded in 1973.
All of those albums are great, though. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Praying Mantis - Time Tells No Lies (1981), which is a duh purchase for fans of TL or NWOBHM, and also, was Riot that overlooked even then? No "Fire Down Under" or anything previous on the list.
Scott claimed that Riot was bigger than Def Leppard at one point once. I wasn't born back when Fire Down Under was released, so I cannot say.
