That was WAY better than I expected, can't wait for the next one.
Yeah, same here. I was not expecting to enjoy it at all but I was thoroughly surprised.

"Lockout" (2012)
Sci-fi actioner bolted together out of bits stolen from "Die Hard," "Outland" and "Escape From New York," with a couple of "Star Wars" style space dogfights thrown in for good measure. In the near future, a maverick military man (Guy Pearce) is sent in to rescue the First Daughter (Maggie Grace), who's been taken hostage during an uprising aboard Earth's first orbiting space prison facility. Pearce and Grace share some good one liners and the sets are impressive but the story is so thin that the movie starts running in place pretty quickly.
Fun while it lasted but three months from now, I doubt I'll even remember that I saw this.

I felt the same way about Lockout, a waste of a decent cast.

Watched a Pantera VHS boootleg from The Bronco Bowl in Dallas. (1985) The other bands on the tape were Midnight Blue and Sweet Savage.

"Real Steel" (2011)
An odd mix of cyber-ass kicking and sappy sentimentality, this family friendly sci-fi feature set in the near future stars Hugh Jackman as a down-on-his-luck "robot boxer" who bonds with his long-lost son over the course of one crazy summer on the World Robot Boxing League circuit.
The "rock'em sock'em robot" fight scenes are loads of fun to watch, even though the schmaltz threatens to overpower the proceedings from time to time.
Added bonus, Evangeline ("Lost") Lilly plays Jackman's girlfriend, and I'd almost forgotten how fiiiiine she is cuz it's been a while since I've seen her.

Jack Reacher (cinema premiere- highly recommended, very well chosen actors, good slow story and one best scene ever with car chase and its sound in cinema)
The Doors (1991 - Oliver Stone movie, good movie with some mistakes but who cares, we know it in right way)
Red Heat (1988 old school soviet Arnold)

Not trying to undermind you enjoyment of the film but I don't think they could have picked a worse actor to portray Jack Reacher. In the books, Reacher is 6'5" 250 lbs with tanned skin, scruffy face, and dirty blonde hair. If anything, Cruise is the anti-Reacher with black hair, clean shaven face, 5'7" and 150 lbs. soaking wet. I don't doubt the movie is an entertaining action flick, however, the fact that they picked one of Hollywood's premiere pretty boys over someone better suited for the role is pretty lame. However, it doesn't suprise me as Hollywood tends to favors the pretty people.

I read the book so long ago (back in the late 70's) that I don't remember it!

That's because Jackson is throwing in a bunch of Tolkien lore that wasn't part of the origional book. And of course embelishing a lot of small stuff (like the stone giants, in the book the group just observed them throwing rocks at each other in a sort of game instead of what was portrayed in the movie-also the giant orc was nowhere near as prominent).
