Thanks, Dark Horseman, you brought to light the other side of the issue and that's important to note, as well.

I'm not a teetotaller, just don't understand the appeal of drinking to intoxication.

As a firefighter, I see the wrong end of drinking (especially underage) way too much to take it lightly.

I don't see the appeal either. It can make you feel good for a short period of time but it's no picnic after you sober up. Even if you don't get a hangover your not feeling your best. However, I've never gotten so drunk I've passed out, that is just plain stupid IMO.

Hence the reason I'm now a beer snob. The beers I drink are meant to be savored not chugged. In fact if you tried to slam most of them I'm pretty sure you'd throw up in short order because they're quite a bit higher in ABV than the beer most people are used to. I even have special glasses that are made for the specific type of beer so you get the full "bouquet".

I think Toho and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to drinking and tasting alcohol. I have special glasses for the different types of alcohol I drink as well. I have a few rules I try to live by as best as I can when it comes to alcohol: Never drink to get drunk, try to drink at home exclusively if possible, try to drink for the subtle taste and experience and nothing more.

So as far as getting drunk, I think it was probably when I was 18 and I had just graduated HS. My buddy had a graduation party at a restaurant and I had shot after shot of vodka (I hate that stuff). My dad came to pick me up and I knew he wouldn't appreciate my state of mind(the man is allergic to alcohol, go figure). The following day he was laughing at me because as he was driving, I kept on telling him to exit off roads that were not going to take us back home. My mom couldn't believe how bad the car smelled the following day because of the alcohol. Thankfully, I didn't act stupid at the restaurant to regret the experience.

The summer after my freshman year in high school, must have been 1980, a group of us gave our money to one of my friend's cousins who bought us each a bottle of Boone's Farm Wine. Cheap, horrible, rotgut stuff, but we got good and buzzed off of it. Don't remember much of the night, not because I was drunk, but because it was pretty boring.

I am now a bit of a beer snob too. Toho mentioned different glasses for different beers and it does make a difference. There is a regional beer here in Ohio that has a Christmas Seasonal (Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Yum!) that is best served in a brandy snifter, believe it or not. Geez, I wish it was December! cheers

Yep, sure seems that way. I did my share of "drink all you can, get wasted, pass out and throw up" back in my 20s. These days it's all about the taste and far less about getting drunk.

And I'm all for the "drink at home" philosophy as well. In fact, back in late March, my best friend and fellow beer snob convinced me to meet him at this bar that sells beer snob brews on tap so we could watch the first round of March Madness. It was fun and there is definitely a difference drinking these Belgian Ales on tap but I was so nervous that I only had 3 over the 4+ hours we were there.

Ya, if I drink out on occasions like Oktoberfest or weddings/birthdays, I just make sure I'm never driving and the person that is hasn't drank anything. Always have to be careful.

My first was Boone Farm as well, Strawberry Hill. However, good thing about cheap horrible stuff like that is that it doesn't taste much worse comming up than going down Very Happy .

I'll have to remember that name this coming Yule season now that I have a beer retailer that gets seasonals from all over the country. I'm also going to stock up on our local Schlafly's Pumpkin Ale in October and their Christmas Ale a month later.

I'm really looking forward to this fall because this outlet gets pumpkin brews from all over the country. I expect to spend a small fortune.

That's me too. Nowadays I can kick back and have a couple of beers...whilst back in the day I had to have ALL the beers, and when they ran out, I had to get more... thankfully I eventually realized I was starting down a slippery slope and managed to pull back. It's been a long time since I drank enough to get more than a slight "buzz," and it's been even longer since I was totally mega-ultra-rippified-McPickled.

I look back on some of the cheap swill I used to swig on a regular basis back then (if it came in a 40 ouncer it was fair game!) and wonder why my liver still speaks to me. Yeah, I had a great time, but I'm kinda glad I don't do it anymore.

Several of my friends from "that era" have had their share of problems related to their alcohol intake over the years, thankfully I got a grip before I ended up down that road.

Sounds like me - I am happy with a good buzz. I rarely get really drunk, I don't like felling like crap the next day. I am not a fan of hangovers.

I've seen enough people have issues because of alcohol intake too. When I was going though everything I had to deal from 2008 - 2011, I made a point not to drink to intoxication to deal with very difficult times.

Every now and then I will beyond my Lemmy - a friend and I named a good buzz a Lemmy, from his movie where he talks about having a constant buzz, i.e "I'm getting my Lemmy going". I think the last couple times I got beyond a Lemmy was last year on my Maiden tour in Ft. Lauderdale and in Derby, England (the beer was damn good!).

Just the first of many stories I could tell from that part of my life where "Toho cheated death". (There's one involving dropping acid in a mountain cabin that actually scared my a$$ so much I got "responsible" - and boring).

Tell us.

OK, here's the incident that turned me around.

My usual drinking and smoking buddies managed to get hold of a hunting cabin up in the mountains of Virginia. We rounded up our usual male and female friends and planned a weekend-long outing.

On the way up to the cabin, somebody broke out what I thought was that candy with dots glued to paper. Nope, it was acid. Peer pressure made me eat one.

We got to the cabin and we were all so wasted that we just hit the woods and went exploring. I remember we found an old, rusted-out tractor and we swarmed all over that thing like ants.

We went back to the cabin which overlooked a small lake and did a few bong hits. By this point, the trees around the lake started moving and swaying. A few beers later and we were starting to get hungry so some of the girls decided to cook something up. They fired up the gas stove and heated up some grub. After a few hours and a few more bong hits, we all passed out.

Around 4am, I woke up needing to go to the bathroom and I heard a hissing noise. I followed my ears and discovered that the girls never turned off the gas. If that cabin hadn't been so damn drafty, we'd have all been blown sky-high by all the lighters we'd been using.

That was when I decided I really needed to get my act together, quit all the excessive partying and get serious about my life and my future.

I don't remember the first time I got drunk, but I always underestimate how drunk I am. I got 'tipsy' on a few beers here and a couple of shots there from when I was about 14, but I could have been worse than I remember.

The first time I got properly, drooling, black-out drunk was when I was 17, and it's still one of the worst hangovers I've ever had in my life. Myself and my best friend had just finished secondary school. Everyone else in our year went to some club, but we were still underage and didn't have much to say to anyone else anyway, so we decided to have cocktails at my house. We tried to make them properly at first, but within an hour we'd given up and were just necking every spirit in the house plus a couple of cans of beer and cider. We got through at least three quarters of a bottle of vodka, a third of Southern Comfort, about a quarter of Malibu, a quarter of Captain Morgans, gin, dark rum, some kind of whiskey and probably more that I don't remember. The killer was a small glass, about 2-3 shots worth, of Tesco Value (supermarket own-brand) rum. My friend tried it first and said it tasted like battery acid, them made me try some (why I did I'll never know). Within half an hour we were both puking like there was no tomorrow. I wen't into the toilet first and got sick, when I came out she was there puking into the kitchen sink because there was nowhere else for her to go. We pretty much spent the next three hours or so sitting on the bathroom floor, crying in between bouts of projectile vomiting. My mum came in at one point and took pictures of us, but I don't know where they went. We finally stopped retching around four in the morning and fell asleep on the couches. I woke up the next morning when the dog jumped on me, feeling more or less fine because I was still pretty drunk. The stealth hangover. I got up, made breakfast, all that. My friend was in bits and couldn't move, so I started cleaning up. Around 11am, it all hit me like a tonne of bricks. Cold sweats, shaking, vomiting, splitting headache. Normally when I get sick in the morning I feel instantly better, but not this time. My veins were black. I haven't been able to touch most beers or whiskey since, and I had that bottle of the horrible rum for six months after because I couldn't bear to open it to throw it out.

And I didn't learn my lesson drunken Not really, I don't set out intending to get wasted (Not that I did on that night, and you can see how that worked out for me), but I have had a few very messy nights. I never saw the point of sitting at home with a bottle, I'm a social drinker. I get really talkative when I drink and It just seems a bit lonely to me. If I did I'd probably drink much more that I do, I only go out to parties or the pub every 2-3 weeks, and no more than once a week.

I'm actually lucky to have lived through my teenage years, probably. I recounted the first time above, but of course, being underage none of my friends were allowed to drink at home, so we would go out to a deserted road or empty lot in the country, drink (and smoke) ourselves silly, and then drive home! One night, when driving home by myself, I distinctly remember thinking, "Be careful, there's a bad curve coming up." The next thing I remember is pulling up to the stop sign at least two miles past the curve. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I am amazed that none of us ever ended up in a bad accident because we certainly were playing the odds.

I was a bit of a straight-edge dude so I always pulled sober driver/make sure no one dies at this party duty. But one night after the athletic awards banquet of my Junior year of high school a group of us went out into my friend Kevin's field next to his house. I used to get so PO'd about those banquets because the guy I considered my rival would always politically be given every soccer award no matter the stats. It was ridiculous. Anyway that night I decided screw it I'm getting hammered. Jack straight from the bottle sharing with my buddy Mark (who was about 6'2 and a good solid 280). Also partaking was our other friend Sam who had a mild form of MS that he took medication for. He claimed he was off it so it was okay for him to drink. Big mistake. After getting nice and toasted (and filled with comradery) Sam starts violently getting sick and HALLUCINATING. All I remember thinking was I get drunk one time and it turns into a nightmare after-school special. The whole scene scared me clean sober when Sam started shivering and convulsing on top of the endless puking. Kevin and I ran to the house to get blankets and in his basement we hear Mark screaming at the top of his lungs for us. We run out there and what we saw about stopped my heart. Sam slumped over on the ground and Mark about 20 feet away lit up white as a ghost. We run to Sam who thankfully wasn't what we thought. He was still babbling incoherently. Turning to Mark we were "what the hell?" And Mark in all seriousness tells us - "He started saying the devil was coming for him... then he said the devil was coming for me!" Off our bewildered looks he added "you stand in a darkened field in the middle of the night and have someone say that too you". Probably had to know Mark to appreciate this story, but I never drank again until the prom the next year.

Dude.... holy sh!t
