How did you manage that? I know some people that have never been drunk and I am not judging you at all, I have family members that I wish would never touch a drop because they can't control themselves once they start. Just curious why not?

I just didnt want to have that happen to me plus I hung out with friends who really didnt drink, and it wasnt like they were against it but just never found it attractive. | I think ths is the right story One of my sisters had a sleep over while the parents were away. I got away with hitting the bong w/out anybody givin me grief. So I started downing the contents of unattended beer bottles and other beverage cups. At first, I was a clown. Then stumbled around. They threw me out in the back and locked me out. I barfed on my German Sherpard and was scolded by my parents when they got home a few days later for asking my sister's friend Cheryl to have sex with me. I was only 12 years old. _________________

| I think I was 20. Just me and some friends having a little party, nothing special. That time in my life was the only time I really drank any. I was more of a social drinker than anything. | |

| Wow, there really is a huge difference in drinking culture here! In Denmark, it's normal to start drinking alcohol at parties and stuff when you're around 15 - Alcohol can be legally purchased in shops when you turn 16 - before January 1 2012, that meant all types of alcohol, but now you have to be 18 to purchase hard liquor (wine and beer is still permitted for 16 year-olds). We have no consumption age, which means that it technically isn't illegal for a 13 year-old to consume alcohol, he just can't purchase it. But yeah, 15-16 is the "suitable" drinking age here. | |

I'm amazed your country's not full of alcoholics. I can just imagine what the States would be like without a legal drinking age.

That is because in the US, we had something called Prohibition - Alcohol was illegal from 1920 - 1933. Prior to prohibition, there wasn't an age limit. After Prohibition was repealed, the age was 18 in most states. In the 80's, a nationwide drinking age was established of 21. The movement was started by evangelical protestants (the Catholic, Orthodox and non-evangelical denominations were not part of the movement) and they manged to get the law passed. Prior to the anti-alcohol movement, the evangelical denominations taught moderation. Prohibition had some dire consequences that the US is dealing with, mainly the growth of the mafia, which exploded in the US. The various mobs controlled almost all of the alcohol distribution in the US. The Mafia was not a big problem until prohibition.

Europeans treat alcohol the same way they treat nudity. Seeing a pair of boobs on the beach or tv didn't turn the nation into a bunch of rapists and perverts either, which some people would have you believe will happen in the US if a nipple is seen in prime time. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

Exactly, the "Puritan mentality" of this country has caused more problems than it ever helped. Our attitude toward alcohol, sex, drugs, nudity, etc are really laughable in this day and age. I can imagine us being quite the laughing stock to many of the European nations, we probably appear as superstitious backwoods hicks to many of them...deservingly so. |

| Ok, this is not to fight or be an ass and i'm wanting to be respectful here. But there is much more then these drive by insults.
One of the big reasons for prohibition was women's temperance movements that gained traction in many of the churches, the Methodists being a big one. (and it should be noted that up until then there weren't many drinking laws so the forbidden fruit excuse has flaws) Husbands were spending so much time at bars and drinking it was becoming a huge social problem. To say it's an American problem is also flawed. Drinking ravages the USSR. Ireland is beset by the social problems of too much drinking. More people around the world are dying from alcohol related issues then AIDs. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/02/18/drinking-facts-alcohol-problems-around-the-world.html I'm not decrying drinking, I drink some, but there is a problem and it's more then in the US. As for being Puritanical, not even sure what you mean. As I work with troubled youth I deal a lot with these issues and see daily the side affects of society's choices.

Wasn't another cause of the women's temperance movement was that it gave women rights as well? I need to see that documentary again, but the legal marrying age, for women, was pretty low(as low as ten, maybe. That's why I need to watch it again, to get all my facts correct). But anyway........... back to The Topic!

| After school we went up into the hills and drank, I puked and then got driven home after the festivities were over.
I still like beer, but If I'm at a party at a bar I will drink two very dry Martinis with three olives and if it is a club show I'll have a beer or two. If my wife is driving that night, I'll have a beer and then water the rest of the night.

| My story and reasons almost exactly mirror Exact33.
Thanks, Dark Horseman, you brought to light the other side of the issue and that's important to note, as well.
I'm not a teetotaller, just don't understand the appeal of drinking to intoxication.
As a firefighter, I see the wrong end of drinking (especially underage) way too much to take it lightly.

I don't see the appeal either. It can make you feel good for a short period of time but it's no picnic after you sober up. Even if you don't get a hangover your not feeling your best. However, I've never gotten so drunk I've passed out, that is just plain stupid IMO.

In fact if you tried to slam most of them I'm pretty sure you'd throw up in short order because they're quite a bit higher in ABV than the beer most people are used to. I even have special glasses that are made for the specific type of beer so you get the full "bouquet". _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.
