No they do not, as a matter fact my area barely plays rock music and the one area classic rock FM station has been axed for an all talk format. But like MG I have not listened to radio in 5 years or longer, even as a kid I did not care for local radio.

We have 2 rock stations in lubbock... 94.5 fmx...they play alot of numetal and modern metal like \"thebandthatshallneverbementionedagain\", Avenged Sevenfold and Anthrax. They do throw in some maiden, megadeth, Godsmack and the likes during the day.
Rock101.1 plays classic rock...everything from Nazareth and deep purple to saxon, the scorpions, ratt and ac/dc to heart, Billy Squire and Rush.

I'm not aware of anything now. I used to listen to Z-Rock in Houston, and I remember being disappointed when I switched the radio to that one day and got something that wasn't Z-Rock. Oh well, I just listen to my CDs in the car now.

When Z-Rock in Dallas went off the air, I listened to the last several hours of it. I was still in High School and stayed up past my bedtime (10:00 pm) to do so. The very last song they played was Metallica-Fade To Black which fit the situation perfectly as after the song they literally faded to black. The next morning I turned the radio on and heard Tejano music putting me in a VERY bad mood the rest of the day.

Z-Rock...geez, I haven't thought of that station in ages. Their short lived New York affiliate was a pain in the ass to get on the radio (well, hell, it was on AM -- AM in general is a pain in the ass to get clearly) ... they sponsored a couple of shows I went to at local clubs when I was in college, including the Savatage/Trouble gig at L'amour in Brooklyn that I regularly refer to as (wait for it) the "Best...concert...EVER."
"Madd Maxx Hammer," the Z-Rock DJ who MC'd the event, was throwing out Z-Rock bumper stickers, buttons, t-shirts, and other swag to the crowd all evening long. For all I know I might still have the bumper sticker I caught at that show stashed in a box somewhere....
...then one fateful day I tuned in Z-Rock on my radio expecting to hear the usual hard rock only to find out that the station had gone "salsa" overnight!!

The more I think about it, I don't recall any music stations in my town playing much metal ever, aside from maybe the hits SoF mentioned.
There was a show called "Metal Shop" that would come on late Saturday (?) nights back in the day, and I don't even remember much of that. Most if not all of the metal I was exposed to back in high school was from tapes, albums, MTV and magazines. Radio was the last place I looked for heavy metal.

One of the classic rock stations around here several years ago had a metal night on Friday where they would play everything from classic Metallica to Metal Church to Slayer. This lasted a while then one day mysteriously dissapeared. That was the last time I listened to regular radio (I do listen to talk radio quite a bit, but none of the music stations).

In this day and age with Spotify, Mog, Last FM, etc. Who the hell needs radio anyway?
I never listened to the radio because I like to choose what I hear, I don't need someone else programming it for me.

I can make my own radio by just putting a bunch of songs on a playlist and put it on shuffle.

That's basically what I'm doing. I have a 4 gig flash drive that I've packed with stuff and I just put the player in the car on "random". It's "Tohoradio - Where You Never Know What We're Going To Play Next!"

It doesnt help that most radio stations have those annoying morning zoo programs in the morning. I want to hear music when i go to work, not DJ's telling jokes, having contests, or even worse, Political talk shows (even the aforementioned classic rock station i mentioned has something called Walton and Johnson which seems to be some political talk show).

I know what you mean. Although the only time I really hear them on very short drives and when someone else has it on, my local classic rock station has a good sense of humor. They have an ad that says, "We don't play Katy Perry...but we'd do her!"

I'm living in Athens and metal's a joke to most of the residents. I call them dogs, they call me ass and that's how time goes by. So as far as I know the only metal station is 'Atlantis' that is off at the first half of the day and goes for stuff like SOAD and maybe some Nu metal (Slipknot). As a more reliable alternative I have Rock FM with some classic rock and some metal balads at best.

I think Metal Shop was the greatest thing that ever existed on radio. Not only was it "the only show with teeth (cue the blade saw)", but I thought Charlie "The Butcher" Kendall had the greatest radio voice. I loved the way he would push bands that were getting overlooked. I discovered Warrior Soul thanks to him. Because it came on friday nights in my high school years I would have my poor mom tape it on cassette for listening when I got home from a night out. After the first 45 minutes she would switch in a new tape side. Was she ever happy when the local station began airing replays on Sundays.
Every once in awhile a vinyl of the show will come up on ebay. They end up going for like 60-70 bucks per show. I always hope someday to come across one of those in the places that sell the old syndicated shows.

Found this on youtube (1:15 for the intro). I would kill for that Metalshop t-shirt today.

That's partly the reason I recently dumped sattelite radio as well (cost and Stern becoming unlistenable being the other 2).
Even though their playlists are 100 times bigger than terresterial radio, after awhile, it's still the same songs over and over. Listen to 'Hair Nation' for a coupla days and you'll hear the same Ratt and Bon Jovi songs over and over. And there might be 100+ channels to choose from, but the reality is that there's only 5 or 6 that I'd listen to on a regular basis.
I'll program my own listening enjoyment from now on, thank you very much.

I think most do not bother with radio period , but then I doubt as a group, we would fit or could be called the average music listener that radio programmers advertise to

Well here is an update to my 1st post. I was the paper the other day and that 3 stations had changed formats, 1 caught my attention. The change was for a station that played christian music and they dumped that format and went to hard rock. Their deomgraphics are to 18-34 year olds and are playing hard new bands. The thing about this is no DJ's and it is called 92.7 "The Bone". They are playing 10,000 songs in a row up to May. After that I'm not sure what is gonna happen, maybe dj's start during that time and commercials start I don't know. I was listening to it on Thurs and it was not bad, yeah they played the usual hard rock stuff but they add in some new Anthrax, Slayer, Overkill, Volbeat......... I like it better than Q98.
There is hope after all will I listen to it all the time since I have siriusxm radio no!
