| I have lived in different apartments for the past 10 years.
Besides not knowing for sure if the neighbours can hear what is happening (ie. using the washroom, playing music, talking on the phone) as I sometimes hear them when they make snoring or grunting sounds, recently I keep faintly hearing computer dial-up modem sounds which I have not heard for years.
I thought the continual hammering and drilling from the apartments on both sides of me, (plus below and above!) for the past 2 or 3 years was bugging me, now they added another thing.
Did I mention when I told the supervisor about it last year and showed screw marks slightly popping through my bedroom wall above my head where I was sleeping, freaking me out, because who knows if they would have kept going and drilled into my skull!
and he said nobody is allowed to do renovations, but this stuff continues...
a few years ago, they told everybody to get flood insurance because bozos have left their bathtubs overflow which leaked through ceilings and destroying other tenants property (couches, beds, computers, tv's, etc) but the property management will not reimburse anyone for damages, unless it is shown to be directly their fault.
That is my rant for the day. have a nice weekend.

| That kind of crap is why I still sleep with earplugs. Back when I lived in an apartment in Tennessee, the layout put the bedrooms over/under each other. It was like having the Playboy Channel in 5.1 Surroundsound. So I started putting earplugs in when I went to bed and got so used to it that now I can't sleep without them because every little noise wakes me up.
Apartment living is why I finally decided to buy a house. Home ownership comes with its own downside but it's still better than living in an apartment. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Back when I lived in an apratment, I used to hear the girl upstairs getting railed by her boyfriend every weekend when he came over. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. I got tired of the nonsense the next door neighbors were doing. They were just plain mean to each other and carried on arguing and fighting. Home ownership has its own set of issues but at least i dont have hear all the nonsense up close. _________________ | |

When I was in the Navy, I was in a cheap apartment with thin walls and one night that was going on next door. It was like they were filming a porn movie over there. I had to blast some music just to drown it out. Several hours later the music stopped and they were at it again. At one point I even decided to cause trouble and yelled, "Oh come on! She's faking it!" However, they ignored me and kept at it. The next morning the apartment was empty making me question whether they were even renters or just squaters. Never happened again. I'd rather have my own place than an apartment, but at the rate my life is going, I will always be on the poverty level. So an apartment will probably be the best I'll ever do (unless I marry a rich broad ).

Sometimes you don't even have to be in an apartment to hear that sorta thing. Years 'n' years ago when I was still a teen livin' with the parents, my brother and I were awakened late one night by the sounds of passion coming from the house next door. And I mean, REALLY freakin' LOUD sounds of passion. I don't know if our next door neighbors had left a window open, or they were gittin' their freak on in their back yard, but wherever they were doin' it, our bedroom was on the back corner of the house (facing their property) and we'd left our window open cuz it was a warm night, so we could hear'em goin' at it like weasels in heat plain as day. What made this whole thing hilarious and disturbing at the same time was that the lady who lived next door, who was actually a very nice person, probably tipped he scales at around 350 pounds. I mean, she was a hippo. So you can imagine the mental pictures going through our heads as we sat there listening to this performance. Thankfully it didn't last long, but the whole time we were on the brink of either utter revulsion or hysterical laughter, and we kept daring each other to part the curtains and take a peek at the action. ("Dude, I dare you to look." "I'm not looking, YOU look!") I wish to state for the record that neither of us did. It probably would've ruined sex for me for life, and at that point I hadn't even had it yet. The neighbors divorced years ago, but the lady of the house still lives next door to my Mom to this very day. Occasionally when I'm visiting my Mom I'll see Neighbor Lady outside working in her garden or whatever, and even though she always says "hi," I still can't look her in the eye. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| A good friend of mine lives in an apartment, next to them is a family who produced six children in 12 years. They are originally from Turkey and southern/south-eastern european people are always loud, they shout around, the argue loud and so is their Sex. Some time ago they exchanged rooms, so their bedroom isn't next to his apartment anymore but now they stuffed those 6 children in there and it's absolute Hell. Everytime i'm at his place i wonder just how loud children can be (no carpets!)...for hours and hours on end. I would go crazy after a few days of enduring this all. So i'm glad i live in a House, no direct neighbours and it's a very quiet neighbourhood anyway - except when i turn on the music | |

Man, is that ever the truth. Before I moved here, I'd lived in 5 states in 15 years so renting was the way to go. But stupid me waited 10 years here before deciding I might be here for a while. I've now been in my house 7 years (as of about a week ago) and I kick myself every day for waiting so long before pulling the trigger.

| I think there are good points to renting and good points to homeownership. If you tend to move around a lot then a home might not be the best but if you are staying and can afford it, a home might make sense. Affording it to me though means you have the funds to pay the mortgage and upkeep. There are a lot of renters these days masquerading as homeowners. _________________ | |

That was my fear. I knew I could afford the mortgage but I wasn't sure I could afford the upkeep.

Exactly!!!!!! I have owned since 1999 and I can't imagine having to ever pay rent. To me, rent is just throwing money away.

Yeah, but I make less than $20K a year (when I have a job) and no working spouse (or spouse at all). Not to mention $5K (soon to be more) in CC debt, $20K in student loans, and no savings. Even once I get a job, save money, and I'm ready to live on my own, it would be irresponsible for me to get a house.

You might comsider moving to an area where the cost to live is less. More often than not, there is no reward without risk. Motivation is usually found when things are done out of necessity and not within one's comfort zone. _________________

| Yes, I know there are ways to do it, but I still object to the idea that everybody can own a home. That's what led to the Sub-Prime Mortgage fiasco. Some people are better off renting than owning just like some are better off owning than renting. Of course this dabate between owning and renting will never end as everybody has a different experience and there is no definate answer as to which is best as it varies from person to person. All I know is I will wait until I'm ready to own when the time is right. Until then I will rent (once I can afford to that is). | |

I totally agree. Not everyone can handle owning a house. _________________
