Subject: 70's "Power Ballads" Mon Dec 19, 2011 10:17 am
I know the term "power ballad" got a bad rap in the 80's when it became the industry standard to include them on every album. But over the weekend, I was playing some old Aerosmith and heard songs like 'Dream On' (the first power ballad?) and 'Home Tonight' and was trying to think of some others. It might make for a cool playlist.
While they might not fit the exact definition of what we now think of the power ballad, I'm looking for slower, melancholy songs by heavy bands. Nothing 80's. Only stuff from the 70's.
Aerosmith - Dream On Aerosmith - Home Tonight Black Sabbath - Changes KISS - Beth Judas Priest - Last Rose of Summer
What else say you?

Accept - Seawinds. One of their best songs IMO. And few touch the greatness of Rainbow's "Catch The Rainbow".

Don't know that Accept tune, but sounds pretty cool on YouTube. 'Catch the Rainbow', another great one.

Good call on those Scopions tunes. I'm not as familiar with their 70's stuff as I'd like to be. I think I have most of those too. At least 3 of the 4.
While the Zep tune is indeed excellent, I've never thought much of it as a "power ballad", just a slow blues number. They've got a few of those in their playlist, like 'I Can't Quit You Baby'. The only one I've ever thought of as a power ballad in the classic sense is 'All of My Love'.

Nice. This playlist is shaping up better than I thought.

Hmmmmm, sounds a little too upbeat to fit here I think. It doesn't help that I'm not really a Rush fan either.

Most songs listed as being a "ballad" aren't. Ballads are supposed to tell stories about specific people/characters. So a song like "The Boys Are Back In Town" is closer to being a true ballad.

I'm just using the term power ballad in the loosest sense possible. When I heard Aerosmith's 'Home Tonight' over the weekend, I forgot what a cool, yet different song it was. It wasn't a simple slow blues number like some of Zeppelin's stuff, but it certainly wasn't a balls-out rocker. What else would you call it?

A good song speaking of Aerosmith, how about 'Mia'?
Another good one. Haven't heard that song in a long time.
