His problems have been well known in the media.
Still, although I'm not a fan of Warrant's music in the least, my condolences go out to his friends, family, and bandmates.

I just got on the computer a couple of minutes ago (and saw the headline), so I thought I would check this board for reaction. I more or less agree with the sentiment that it's not much of a surprise, but ultimately still very sad. I remember seeing Jani on Celebrity Fit Club a few years ago and it was evident that weight issues weren't the only thing affecting his psyche. He looked like he had some serous substance abuse issues also. The four part series history of heavy metal that VH1 put out a couple of years back told me a lot about Jani and his demons. Very unfortunate...

Another rock n roll icon succums to his demons. What a shame/waste.
I can't help always thinking WHY? I mean your moderately famous, you got some cash, whats the deal? I mean all in all life does not suck that bad and if it did/does for you take that fame, that notorioty, that cash and do something constructive. ? I just don't get it.
That said, 47 is just WAY TOO YOUNG to pass.

Shocked and saddened by the loss of Jani Lane. He was a great singer and songwriter, and only 47. He was only 10 months older than I am. May he rest in peace.

RIP Jani
I have so many great memories tied to Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich. Partying on the last day of school cranking "Down Boys". Homecoming dances with "Heaven" blaring. An album where memories just flood back. Those people who die that provided the soundtrack to your youth always seem to hit a little harder with their passing. Too young and too much to offer. Thanks for the music, Jani.

OK, thanks, I knew it was something like that. Well Alice Cooper is playing here tonight, but sadly I am not going due to family responsibilities. I would love to hear what Alice has to say. Maybe Blabbermouth will cover it.
I should mention he did co wrote a song with Alice on 'Along came a Spider' called the The One That Got Away." which I forgot til I read his obituary today.

Shame. Jani was great songwriter and a good showman...got to see him live a few times, always gave it his all.
Sadly, his demons got the best of him...even if he died sober and clean, his body was probably wiped from the years of abuse.

Like I said earlier not a fan of his music at all, but I hate the fact that so many musicians have died from substance abuse and the list is endless.

The entire metal community is mourning the death of Warrant singer Jani Lane ... including Slash who posted a message saying, "Just heard about Jani Lane. What a shame. RIP man."
Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crue also weighed in ... saying, "I just heard the sad news about Jani Lane. So hard to swallow when people have kids. RIP."
Alice Cooper posted a message calling Lane a "fallen brother." And Bret Michaels from Poison added, "We'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Jani Lane regarding their loss
Jani Lane's former band will pay tribute to the fallen singer at their concert tonight in North Dakota ... TMZ has learned.
Guitarist Erik Turner -- who co-founded the band -- tells us, "We will be making a tribute before we play the song 'Heaven' tonight."
He adds, "We never thought that when the song 'Heaven' was written we would be playing it someday in the memory of Jani's untimely death. This is a very sad day for rock and roll. One of the great things about music is that it lives on forever."
Lane penned the song "Heaven" back in 1989 -- and it's said to be the band's most commercially successful single.
Following the recent announcement of the death of former Warrant singer, Jani Lane, a number of his peers have posted messages of condolence online. Some of the tributes read as follows:
Slash: "Just heard about Jani Lane. What a shame. RIP man."
Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue): "I just heard the sad news about Janie Lane. So hard to swallow when people have kids. RIP."
Bret Michaels (Poison: “We'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Jani Lane regarding their loss. Respectfully, Bret and all at MEGI.”
Alice Cooper: "Our thoughts go out to our fallen brother Jani Lane, his family, his friends and his fans."
Professional wrestler and Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho stated: "Sad to hear about the passing of Jani Lane. Jani was a good guy and one of the best songwriters in the late 80s Dog Eat Dog-very underrated.”
Steven Adler: "I'm so sad that I lost another dear friend to this horrible disease. I've known Jani for over 30 years and he had a heart of gold. Luv u bro."

Has there been any statement from the Warrant camp about Jani's passing yet?
**EDIT** Two seconds after I post this, I glanced @ Blabbermouth and lookie here...
Jani Lane's ex-bandmates in WARRANT have released the following statement regarding their former singer's passing:
"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Jani's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
"Jani was a very important part of our lives for a long time. We will always be incredibly proud of the music we created together. He was a true talent and will be missed by all of us."
And also:
According to TMZ.com, the current lineup of WARRANT will pay tribute to its former lead singer, Jani Lane, at its concert in North Dakota Friday night (August 12).
Guitarist Erik Turner — who co-founded the band — tells the site, "We will be making a tribute before we play the song 'Heaven' tonight."
He adds, "We never thought that when the song 'Heaven' was written we would be playing it some day in the memory of Jani's untimely death.
"This is a very sad day for rock and roll.
"One of the great things about music is that it lives on forever."

This is it so far:
Past and present members of Warrant are mourning the loss of their old frontman Jani Lane -- claiming, "He was a true talent and will be missed by all of us."
The band released a collective statement on their website moments ago, on behalf of all former and current members -- adding, "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Jani's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
"Jani was a very important part of our lives for a long time. We will always be incredibly proud of the music we created together."

Seems to me in Jani's case, his problems stemmed from trying to get back to the money & fame. Unlike Amy Winehouse, he wasn't exactly at the top of his game these days.

He was manic depressive, I think. And it bothered him tremendously that of all the songs written, everyone knew him for "Cherry Pie" which he literally write off in 10 minutes to appease the execs at CBS.
Drinking and drugs don't help at all when you already has depression issues.
I got to see him twice in the last 5 years and both times he was great. Still a showman, still sounded good. I think he was after respect as an artist...which just wasn't happening, and the little that did happen, he was too blurred to notice.

I uploaded this tune to YouTube because I think it shows a different side of his vocals.
Pretty paint-by-numbers, but still a great cover.

I was watching a clip on YouTube this morning from October last year (it was an acoustic medley of Warrant songs during a Great White concert). He looked great, was very personable with the crowd and he hit every note.

He's done a lot of covers over the years (Zeppelin, VH, Priest, Bon Jovi, etc.) and has always done a good job no matter who the artist was.

i wasnt saying that in his case - just giving my opinion to martinsane's question of why moderately famous people die so young sometimes.
