Giant was, IMO, one of the best bands to come out of the late 80s/early 90s Melodic Hard Rock (MHR) scene. Dann Huff is a beast of a guitar player, the songs had hooks for miles and the debut CD Last Of The Runaways is a bonafide classic album in MHR circles.

They put out another album, Time To Burn, that was very good in it's own right, but just released at a bad time (1992, I think) and just flopped hard.

They scraped together some leftovers for III released on Frontiers a few years ago, but even Giant's leftovers proves to be some kick ass MHR.

Now, they've put out a new album called Promise Land. Dann Huff is no longer in the band (but he did contribute a bit of writing and playing on the record) and has been replaced vocally by Terry Brock (lately of Seventh Key and Slamer) and on guitar by John Roth (lately of Winger). The sound does not stray from the Giant vibe, but the change in vocalist does throw you at first. David Huff (drums) and Mike Brignardello (bass) are still a part of the band.

Any fans? What do you all think of the new record?

I've listened a couple times and miss Dann's voice. It also doesn't have the fire in the guitar playing i've come to expect. I might still pick it up, i'll just have to get used to the changes.

I think the songs are still there, though. Dann is in a whole different league in terms of guitar playing than a lot of guitarists...but I think John Roth holds his own quite well...and I like Terry Brock's voice...

Always amazing to me that Dave and Dann were both in early White Heart.... a far cry from Giant...

I love Terry Brock's voice and the two albums with Strangeways are classics of the highest order. That said, I could never get in to Giant and what I heard of the new one didn't appeal to me much. I'll wait for the reunion album with Terry back in Strangeways later this year.

I like Giant quite a bit. I have the first two albums.

Still need to acquire "III" and this new one.

Never actually heard any Giant, but I remember seeing their discs all the time in a used shop I used to frequent. I only know the name Dann Huff from his production credits.

There was much uproar when Dann Huff produced a couple of Megadeth records (CRYPTIC WRITINGS and RISK).

Looking back, I could see how that might raise a stink in the thrash community, but at the time I wasn't familiar with Mr. Huff's past so it didn't bother me none.

That's my favorite of the two I have. Both good albums though.

They are fairly regular players for me.

I like it too - the first one is better than the 2nd
