Divine Empire is my fav death metal band. They have the speed, the vocals, and the groove. What separates them for me is the fact that they have these killer groove breakdowns and the songs just pummel.
I highly recommend Redemption as it is in fact my fav Death Metal album out there.
Im not a fan of death metal but there are a few gems within the genre.
Redemption is 1998 so I dont know if that fits the bill, but worth the check out.

I love all the Death albums mentioned but my highest recommendation would go to Spiritual Healing. Not just one of my favorite death metal albums but one of my favorite albums period.
Also Obituary's Slowly We Rot and Cause Of Death are quite great.

CORPSE - From The Grave
It was released in 1997, so it breaks that rule, but it sounds like it came from 1991.

Mortification - Scrolls of the Megilloth and Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes are two of my all time favorite albums. Bolt Thrower War Master is right up there too. I tend to like the less complicated, grunt-n-grind style of death metal.
Also gonna add to the list Six Feet Under - Haunted (1995)
