The post on classical music had me thinking about another style of music I live... Jazz! Do we have any jazz enthusiasts in the house? If so, let me know your favorite artist. Mine would be John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Tito Puente and Charlie "Bird" Parker.

Ah! Another Elling fan! Awesome! As I am a choir director with a vocal jazz ensemble, I tend to listen to a lot of vocal stuff. Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Mel Torme, John Pizzarelli, the aforementioned Kurt Elling, New York Voices, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Obviously, I'm a huge jazz fan.

Jaco Pastorius is possibly the best bass player to ever pick up the instrument. Too bad his life was cut short. I should mention some of my instrumental faves, too: Miles, Trane, Paul Desmond, Dave Brubeck, Laurence Hobgood (Kurt Elling's pianist), Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Weather Report, and many others I'm too lazy to look up right now!

interesting, out of those I only have 'The Magic City' and 'Atlantis'. 'Lanquidity' and 'Jazz in Silhouette' are good as well. I'll have to get 'Nubians..' and then I also want 'Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy'. I was at the main library a couple of weeks ago and there was a small jazz-oriented square with some CD's and books on it in the middle of by where the DVD's are, and one whole side of it was the famous picture of Sun Ra in his glasses, done up all Warhol-like. Ironically, none of his albums were sitting on it, and a lot of people walking by probably have no idea who it is.

Far beyond his pure jazz era, but I heard some stuff from Miles Davis 'Pangaea' live album today and it's astounding. He took the swing and dragged it through dark, multicultural corners, and it was all improvised in Japan.
