My ol' Lady has the Time/Life singer & songwriters collection and it has alot of decent stuff. I guess the nostalgia of remembering what older sisters were listening to while doing chores has some merit after all these years.
My favorite is probably "No Matter What" by Badfinger

My first concert ever was Air Supply in the early 80's with my mom at the County Fair, when i was too young to even care about music.

I actually like some Air Supply songs. I should probably get their Greatest Hits or something.
Same with Toto.
I don't have much of this genre in my collection - but my taste is pretty vast, so I should.

You know who wrote a surprising number of soft rock songs? Warren Zevon. "Carmelita", "Frank & Jesse James", "Desperados Under The Eaves" and of course "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner".

I love the whole "The Stranger" album. It is probably one of my favorite albums from the 70's. I listen to it pretty often, and usually from beginning to end. I actually have it on cassette, CD and vynil!

I think early Elton John is brillant, I don't know what happened to his brillance during the mid 80's but those early Elton John records like 'Madman Across the Water' 'Godbye Yellow Brick Road' and 'Tumbleweed Connection' are all gold IMO.
I agree... his 70's material is absolutely brilliant. I actually like some of the very early 80's stuff too, like "I guess that is why they call it the blues" and "I'm still standing". But, he just went all crap from that point on.

Maybe closer to pop or pop rock but I adore the Plumb album 'candycoatedwaterdrops'. It's rock, yeah, but... lush symphonic stuff pops up..and the whole thing is delicate...and so very sweetly morose.

This is definitely a one hit wonder. I've always thought the song was beautiful, but sadly the group really went nowhere after this song. It probably didn't help that the name of the band was Sneaker. It's also funny that this band was produced by Jeff Baxter, since Jeff left the Doobie Brothers over songs that were following somewhat of a similar sound under Michael McDonald.

I donot consider Foreigner soft rock, but this song certainly is, and I hate to admit it, but I love the song.
I even like Mariah Carey's cover of the song.

Never heard the Mariah Carey version, and considering she completely butchered Open Arms, I don't think I want to hear her version of I wanna know what love is.
But I agree, Foreigner is hardly a soft rock band.

Foreigner isn't a soft rock band, but like Manny said - that song is.
And I have to admit to absolutely loving that song.

My favorite "mellow" song of all time is probably Neil Young's "Old Man" or that Chuck Mangione tune from the 70's. Lionel Ritchie's "Runnin' w/ the Night is cool, too as is Phil Collin's "Easy Lover." Peace.

some of the softer Journey singles that played with the smoky R&B influence were incredible, i.e. 'Who's Crying Now', 'Send Her My Love'.

I have a bunch of 70's tracks in my Ipod titled "70's Pop Culture Hits" with sections titled "Story Songs", "Love Songs", Super Hits", "Motown Hits", and even "TV Theme songs". I have way too many to mention in all of those but here's a few soft rock songs off the top of my head:
Lotta Love......Nicolette Larson Easy......Commodores Escape (Pina Colada Song).......Rupert Holmes Wildfire......Michael Martin Murphy Betty Davis Eyes......Kim Carnes Total Eclipse of the heart........Bonnie Tyler Hello It's Me........Todd Rundgren Ride like the wind, Sailing......Christopher Cross Baby Come Back.......Player Cats In The Cradle......Harry Chapin Ebony Eyes, Sentimental lady......Bob Welch Youre So Vain.......Carly Simon I'm Not In Love........10CC Heart Of The Night.......Poco Imaginary Lover, So Into You......Atlanta Rythym Section How Much I feel........Ambrosia Without You..........Harry Nilsson I Go Crazy.......Paul whats his face Sharing The Night........Dr. Hook When I need You......Leo Sayer (yeah, so what!) Kiss You All Over.......Exile
a very small example of what I have in the 70's soft rock department. My guilty pleasures. My ultimate feel good music. My heart feels so warm and mushy when I listen to this stuff. My wife thinks I'm weird. Do you guys think I'm weird for listening to this stuff?

I just thought of a band that I like that might qualify:
The Carpenters.
Are they soft rock?
Also, how about Olivia Newton John? Or is she more pop? I like her too.
