I still find myself occasionally whistling the saxophone bit in this song to this very day.

I like all of the above. As I get older I find myself listening to more and more of that alot. I listen to music at work so I try to go classic rock one day, mellow stuff the next, thrash or power metal one day, classic heavy metal, 80's pop rock, etc....
I aint out to impress anyone so I listen to what I want, whatever makes me feel good.

One of the best written song ever IMO
There are hundreds of songs in this genre I love but these came right to mind...

I actually like alot of soft rock... it is my guilty pleasure. I ordered Time Life's "Singers and Songwriters" series, and it is one of the first things I added to my iPod. I actually like alot of the songs by America, especially "Horse with no name" (I know...total Neil Young ripoff), "Ventura Highway" and "Sister Golden Hair". I was worn in 1970, so I associate alot of these songs with my childhood years, the way I associate 80's pop with my teen years and 90's alternative with my college and young adult years. The 00's didn't give me much to be nostalgic about, however.

Probably something by 70's-era Billy Joel. 'Don't Go Changing' comes to mind.

I find that soft rock (as opposed to some hard rock) can tend to have more room to be artful and/or introspective, and sometimes there's stuff I'm really drawn to. yeah, Billy Joel has a lot of good stuff, but an equal amount of crap..IMO. I'm into 'Goodnight Saigon', 'New York State of Mind', 'Vienna'..not so much 'Only the Good Die Young', 'River of Dreams'..

Not sure of a favorite but I like older Neil Diamond and Billy Joel. I can even listen to some Gordon LIghtfoot on occasion.

Billy is actually pretty frustrating for me, because 'Only the Good..' and a few other songs kind of really stain the catalog, for me, and I never want to pick up his remastered stuff. Just really hate that song.

I'm kind of meh, about Only The Good but Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, is a great one as is The Entertainer and It's Still Rock And Roll To Me. He's sporadic but some really good ones are in there.

I like early Elton John. "Tiny Dancer", "Levon", "Your Song"...really mellow songs but really well written songs IMO.

I think early Elton John is brillant, I don't know what happened to his brillance during the mid 80's but those early Elton John records like 'Madman Across the Water' 'Godbye Yellow Brick Road' and 'Tumbleweed Connection' are all gold IMO.

Elton lost me when he started doing soundtracks for Disney. All of his songs became weepy, sugary sweet, maudlin ballads. . Remember when rock was young? Suzi & I, boy did we have some fun.

I was first introduced to Elton John as a kid thanks to his appearance on The Muppet Show. He sang "Crocodile Rock" at a piano on a little island in the midst of a crocodile pond, and the Muppet crocs sang all the "LAAAAAAA-LALALALALALA!" backing vocals. It was awesome.

Yeah, same here. Elton John died with the birth of The Lion King.
