When ACCIDENT first came out in '97 it racked up so many rave reviews in the metal mags (i.e. "Best Iron Maiden album that Iron Maiden never made," "Bruce's best performance since POWERSLAVE," etc.) that I thought to myself, "It really can't be THAT good, can it?" ... but it was!!!
Between ACCIDENT, Overkill's FROM THE UNDERGROUND AND BELOW and Priest's JUGULATOR, 1997 was a pretty great year for metal. It was the first time in a while that I felt something was actually "happening" in the scene. All of a sudden all the old timers were comin' back with killer new releases.
To this day I kick myself for missing Bruce's stop at the Birch Hill in Old Bridge during the ACCIDENT tour

Accident of Birth is my personal favorite. It's a heavy but very melodic album due to Adrian's blues-based guitar playing and Bruce's artistic, melodic songwriting.
Some great tracks. Road to Hell is great - sounds a lot like a "forgotten" Maiden song.

Since my initial post back on '07, I now have all of Bruce's solo albums, so I'm gonna have to break them out and give 'em all a fresh spin to see if I feel any differently.
I'm still leaning towards Accident of Birth being the favorite, but I'm curious to see what's all the hub-bub over Skunkworks. I seem to recall it being just fine. Also surprised to see no love fot Tyranny of Souls. I thought that was good too.

Agreed, TYRANNY OF SOULS is a pretty damn fine piece of work.

Tattooed Millionaire for me. I've loved that thing from the get go.
You and me both. Even after all these years I still love it and frequently play it.

Speaking of Bruce Dickinson... I just stumbled across this on YouTube...
Bruce singing Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers," apparently with Dream Theater as his backing band. Sounds pretty sweet. Anyone have a clue where/when/how this was recorded? Is it from a tribute album, a B-side, etc? I had no idea this combo even existed.
(EDIT: Posted this on my Facebook and my friend Brian came to my rescue with this info...)

The Bruce Dickinson rockshow
This show was aired on a weekly basis on BBC's radio 1 and each program featured different artists who used to play live in the BBC studio. In one particular show UK rockers Terrorvision were the guests and the...y surprised Bruce by playing a jazzy version of "Bring your daughter to the slaughter".
Another memorable broadcast was when Dream Theater were doing a session on the show. They invited Bruce to a gig they were to have at Ronnie Scott's the next week, but as he had to do a radio show that night, he couldn't go.
So, Dream Theater would not leave the studio until they got Bruce to record a splendid rendition of Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers" with them. Bruce kept this quiet until the last show of the series when his producer persuaded him to air it.
The song is available on a Dream Theater bootleg called "Acoustic dreams", so keep your eyes open when you're in stores looking for boots.

Haven't heard the other three yet.

Balls To Picasso is a really good album, nice to hear Bruce in such a stripped-down format, stretching outside of the Iron Maiden comfort zone. Cyclops, Hell No, Fire, Tears Of The Dragon and 1000 Points of Light are all good tunes.
I like all of these solo albums better than the Blaze-era Maiden albums.

There is a short video clip of Bruce/DT recording this on DT's "5 Years In A Livetime" DVD...

Yeah, I remember that part of the video. This was done around the same time the other cover songs from Change Of Seasons was recorded. They also showed great covers of Metallica-Damage Inc. (w/ Barney from Napalm Death) and Marillion-Easter (with Marillion members Hogarth and Rothery).

When I want to listen to Bruce 'the solo artist' as much as possible I want to detach myself to that Maiden listening experience that is associated with his voice, while all of his albums are Good, IMO 'Balls To Picasso' takes the cake for pure musicality and soul, tho I'm not dismissing Adrian's musical creativity but when it comes to note choices, Roy Z really knows his stuff, the album in every sense, is insanely memorable...Tattoed Millionaire comes in second, it's Glam-flavored but it's good
"Accident", "Chemical" and "Tyranny" didn't leave a lasting impression on me while "Skunkworks" is somewhat lethargic, That being said, Bruce never released a bad album and I give him props to that
