Oh, no, not again...SLAYER TOUR POSTPONED!

California thrash metal legends SLAYER have been forced to cancel all of their immediate tour plans — including the American and Canadian Carnage tour dates with MEGADETH and TESTAMENT that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's European headline tour scheduled for March and April.

SLAYER bassist/vocalist Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band's Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a cervical radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures. While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms.

"Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said SLAYER's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."

The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.

Booking agents for both SLAYER and MEGADETH are already hard at work rescheduling tour dates; tickets already purchased for all shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.

Sales added, "As unfortunate as this is for so many people — the MEGADETH and TESTAMENT camps, the concerts' promoters, and, of course, the fans — Tom's health is the number one priority, and this has to happen."

But man, this sucks. Well, as a consolation for me, Nile and Immolation are playing the same night. Operation Ticket Switch...commence!

Awesome!.....I mean that sucks and everything for araya but when I saw that tickets were unavailable for portland I thought I just got on it too late and they sold out or whatever. Atleast this way they'll just reschedule sometime and I may get the chance to see them again.


....and the lead rules.

Oh man. What a bummer. I was totally looking forward to this show. Oh well.

So let me see if I got this straight...

Slayer isn't just dropping off the tour, right? The show isn't going on without them? The whole thing is just being rescheduled. Well, if that's the case, it's potentially good news for me. I couldn't make the local show on Feb. 13th due to scheduling conflicts. Maybe I'll be able to make the new date.

Oh and good luck to Tom with the surgery.

I wasn't able to get tickets so if this thing is going to be re-scheduled then it's good for me. But if they do go ahead without Slayer i wonder who will be the replacement?

Geez, Slayer must be cursed or somethin'. This is what, the second or third tour they've had to postpone/cancel now?

Well, Tom is about 50 and playing at the speed most of their songs are has got to eventually take it's toll.

Oh how the mighty have....aged. God we're all getting old, and it SUCKS!

Hopefully he's gonna be back in shape because I'd hate to see Slayer retire from the metal scene like this. But Tom's had quite a few problems lately - his voice gave up on the Australian tour and shortly thereafter he started having these back problems.

Hopefully he'll have a speedy recovery.


This does bring in question for how much longer Slayer will be around - sticking to their rigorous and seemingly endless touring schedule and recording and releasing albums. I know Araya mentioned retirement several times in the past - how he won't be able to keep up with the intensity of Slayer's music for much longer. Some thought and perhaps still think World Painted Blood will be Slayer's last album but then again I think Slayer mentioned that they're thinking of recording one more album before they decide what to do...

Unfortunately not every band is like Dio , Sabbath or Motorhead or Judas Priest they're the few ones that I think have outlasted about 3 generations of metal bands.

Yeah, Slayer is cursed...it's the curse all of us have; the curse of aging! And yeah, it's lame (no pun intended!).

I not only hope he fully recovers from the surgery, but also that he considers his age from now on and doesn't hurt himself more.

And once they reschedule this tour, man, I am THERE.
