I was asked to leave a church confirmation class once when the instructor started in on the "Rock is evil y'know. KISS stands for Knights In Satan's Service, AC/DC stands for Anti-Christ, Devil's Child" nonsense. I couldn't help myself, I started laughing. When the instructor (a real hard core fire-and-brimstone type from Texas) asked me what was so funny, I said "I'm sorry, but YOU are. That stuff about KISS and AC/DC is totally bogus." So she sez "Well then maybe you ought to wait outside," to which I said "gladly."

Totally! And Ozzy Osbourne once threw a bunch of kittens on into the audience and refused to continue the show till the crowd killed them... And Alice Cooper once passed a bucket around the front row so people could spit in it, then he drank the spit... gotta love those old "urban legends" I was once told that, in a fulfillment of a verse from the Old Testament, concerts were loud so that the screams of victims would not be heard. I tried to find the verse, but I don't remember the book any more. Evidently, one of Israel's enemies practiced human sacrifice and they would play music loudly and make other assorted noises so that the screams of the sacrificial victims could not be heard. It was implied to me that "evil rock bands" like KISS played loud at concerts for the same purpose.

| I count my blessings that both my parents and the Catholic school I attended encouraged me to love and be entertained by music. For whatever reason, my parents (midwest small town born and bred) were very much against the PMRC. We used to subscribe to Frank Zappa's Rock Confidential anti-cencorship newsletter. It was hard not to laugh at all the craziness those groups provoked....
W.A.S.P. = We Are Satan's Priest. My mom even got me a W.A.S.P. poster to show solidarity for them. The mis-reading of Twisted Sister's Under The Blade, and boy did it take a sick mind to come up with that interpretation. Two of my favorites were that Bruce Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark and Duran Duran's A View To A Kill (with the chorus of "dance into the fire") were satanic. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and DURAN DURAN! Another funny one was the outcry over Cyndi Lauper's She Bop. Honestly I thought at the time the song was about dancing. Then these groups all taught me what it really was about.
I always thought King Diamond was a genius on those Geraldo specials. If they want to call you evil, act like the biggest devil going.
The one guy in the video is right about one thing though, it's all about filling the auditorium and getting the people's money. Something he clearly knows all too well.

Thankfully, my parents were the same way. I guess cuz Mom was a big Beatles fan and my Dad was an Elvis fan, and both of those artists went through their own "They're the spawn of the devil!" controversies over the years. I do remember seeing bits of the PMRC hearings on the news back then and watching Tipper Gore hold up big blow-ups of various albums on their "Filthy Fifteen" list - Venom, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, etc. -- and my brother and I were going "I have that one! I got that one! I got that one too!" My Dad just rolled his eyes and said something like " This is what you spend your money on? Good grief." _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

That wasn't because of music...it was an expression of the Black Metal mindset...which is also what the music was...the music and the actions were based on the same ideals...the music itself did not cause people to burn churches...they would have done that anyway. |

| I was lucky. My parents are conservative christians with a sense of humor and some realism. They never bought into those things and my Dad laughed when I came home from camp and I told him I rescued some innocent albums from being burned. Weird thing is, i've met non-fundy types who believe this stuff too but think it's cool. |

| My belief system is totaly based on it's not what goes into your body that defiles you but what comes out. I have this Rolling Stones pull over hoodie w/ the tounge logo and "established 1962" on the front. Wore it to an outreach at a park in San Fransisco. A guy from one of the other church groups came up to me after we played and gave me some grief about my hoodie. He said, while pointing at the print, "that is the world brother" and began to lecture me about it. I let him finish, cause I am polite (most of the time) and then responded. I pointed at the Nike swoosh on his golf shirt (he wore a Nike hat as well) and stated that it was a corporate symbol just like the tounge on my hoodie. Nike pays out millions of dollars for endorsements to sports figures who live a lifestyle that is just as bad or worse than anybody in The Rolling Stones. So why is what you're sporting any better than what I am? I then elaborated, what you have is a personal conviction towards something and that is fine. It isn't fine for you to push your personal conviction on another and hide behind biblical and spiritual principals that you take out of context. He understood my point, but gave me the "I don't think Jesus would be wearing that" I said maybe you're right but that can work both ways. Though I can tell you that I believe Jesus would be in the parking lot at the stadium after the Stones performance ministering to folks and not being judgemental and chastising them due to wardrobe choice. Sorry for the lil rabbit trail, felt it might be pertinent to the discussion ? _________________ | |

I remember that case. There was actually a thread about it on another metal board I post at a few months ago. I actually remember Pahler's parents tried to ban the sale of "death metal" to minors. Funny because Slayer is NOT a death metal band, but a thrash metal band. Also, there are TONS of death metal bands with little to no offensive content in their lyrics. Tons and tons of them. However, I'm sure the parents also consider Pantera, Metal Church, Obsession, Machine Head, and even Dream Theater to be death metal bands as well. I wouldn't doubt they would not just like to ban the sale of death metal to minors, but all metal in general.

Bravo! This is something that all those who hide behind Christianity to back up their personal convictions would do well to remember. This is the answer to "What would Jesus do?"

| While I was raised Catholic, my parents weren't strict about it at all. I do however remember not being allowed to watch KISS Meets The Phantom Of the Park in it's original TV broadcast. I think it was that they thought it wasn't age-appropriate for me at the time [I was only 7 or 8] though more than anything else. Or maybe it was on past my bed-time? I think it was a few years later when I saw a repeat over a friends house. When I got into high-school and heavy metal, they were cool about it. Being raised on Elvis and the Beatles, they knew it was just entertainment. My dad hassled me about the "long-haired girly-men in make-up" more than anything. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

Same deal with me. I didn't see Kiss Meets the Phantom till quite a few years later (it first aired in '78, so we're talking '84 or '85 maybe) when it turned up on the Late Movie one night. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

You have AC/DC all wrong - it's after Christ devil comes On a side note, I remember at a 7th grade dance, the DJ played "Highway To Hell" It was awesome........ Did I mention I went to a Catholic school at the time?
