I have always liked "Too Much Time On My Hands" and the "Blue Collar Man" songs very much. I think the singer (is it Dennis DeYoung?) well I think he has a great rock n roll voice. "The Best Of Times", "Babe", "Come Sail AwaY" are also great STYX songs.

The singer on Too Much Time and Blue Collar man is Tommy Shaw. DeYoung is the singer on the other songs you mention.

Tommy's a great singer, but for sheer talent, he has nothing on DeYoung.

I find it interesting that several of us differentiate between bands like Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Kansas, Chicago etc...
Of the so-called "classic rock" bands, the only one I can think of that I hate is Journey.
I like all the rest of 'em.
But then other people post how they like all those bands except Chicago.
Go figure. We're all the same yet we're all different.

Didn't really know that, thanks for the info, I guess I have liked Tommy Shaw's voice for a long time and didn't really know it!

Never saw as many similarities with Styx and those other bands, besides the 70's feel, and slick production.... like Journey with Perry was just kind of this white R&B influenced band that occasionally rocked pretty hard... really not a lot like Styx. Styx to me is a lot of the good elements of the more baroque Queen sounds with a tighter focus to rock music..

I see a lot of similarities between Styx and Journey. Just me I guess.
Now Chicago to me is a different kind of animal all together. But that might be just me too.

yeah I do think Chicago is different. Not least of all because they're 40405040x worse than either of the other bands.

Chicago's early jazz-rock stuff is great. Everything pre-"It's not loaded" is awesome.

When I was in Grade 6, their hit on the radio was "Babe", and it was a nice song. That, and Cheap Trick's "Voices" were considered sappy ballads for teenage girls, and not considered serious, especially by rock magazine critics back then.
I remember guys in to Led Zeppelin at school made fun of anyone into Styx. Yes, there has always been somebody into a "heavier""cooler" band that picked on others for liking what was commercial / popular.
I didn't know anything about STYX. A year or two later, a friend gave me The Grand Illusion cassette (along with a few others, as he knew I didn't get an allowance - by Grade 8 / 9 I had 2 newspaper routes, and delivered pharmacy prescriptions on my bicycle, just so I could buy albums mainly).
The Grand Illusion album I thought was as great as KISS and The Who at that point, who were the heaviest bands I was into at that point.
I always thought STRYPER sounded sort of like STYX with the syrupy, sweet, soft melodic songs, but Stryper pushed it too far and I couldn't stand a lot of it, even though I loved their heavier songs like Soldiers Under Command.
fave albums - Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Cornerstone, Paradise Theater, Equinox, Pieces Of Eight

This is a curious 80s band. A touch of Europe and Styx. Lots of hooks and melodies.
