What do you all think of Frank Zappa?

I think he was one of the coolest rock stars and one of the smartest too. If it weren't his involvement in fighting against the PMRC they have completely censored heavy metal.

I am not terribly familiar with his music but I respect the hell outta that guy. A very outspoken, intelligent and witty man. Shame that he went before his time.

He gave Alice Cooper his first shot, for that I respect him, but when people say "overrated" I think of Frank Zappa, soon after I think Ozzy Osbourne.

He was a musical genius that most folks don't get. They focus on the humor aspect rather than the composition. I only began listening as a kid because Terry Bozzio was his drummer for a while. Zappa has had many great musicians in his band(s) over the years. I don't like all his catalog but alot of interesting and a mazing stuff exists, Won't float eveyone's boat, fer sures.

Same here. I like the man more than his music, however, just in the last 2 or 3 years, I've been getting more into his music. My brother-in-law is a huge fan and he's given me a cdr of his favorites. And I saw the Zappa Plays Zappa live show, which turned me on to his music more.

The guy was an incredible musician and songwriter, and did not believe in scared cows. During his lifetime both politicians on the left and the right where lampooned by Zappa, while he was very critical toward Reagan, he also held in disdain Tipper Gore, Jesse Jackson, actually Zappa had no use for politicians in general. He thought they where at best, morons.

Of course Zappa made fun of the hippie movement, disco, religion, other musicians, rock music in general and himself.

Aside from all of that the guy was one hell of a guitarist.

Plus he was completely drug and alcohol free. Being a rock star in the 60's and 70's and being completely straight was unheard of, except for the Nuge, and Gene Simmons (but they parleyed that else where) and I respect him a great deal for that. Also he was a great guitar player and song writer.
