Voivod drummer Michel ‘Away’ Langevin has spoken to Classic Rock about the future of the band – and he admits he’s not sure if there will be any new material from the celebrated Canadians. “To be honest, I have to think very seriously about whether I can actually come to terms with writing with someone else apart from Piggy (guitarist Denis D’Amour). Since he died in 2005, I have found it hard to come to terms with the thought of the band doing a new album. I spent 25 years writing with him. “But then, so many people have said to me that we should carry on. One kid even told me: ‘Great bands do not stop.’ That made me think.” Voivod are to release a live DVD around Christmas time. It’s titled Tatsumaki. Voivod. Japan. 2008. This was filmed and recorded in Tokyo last year, when the band toured with Testament. Away has also just published a book of his artwork. It’s titled Worlds Away – Voivod And The Art Of Michel Langevin. “We’ve printed 3,000 copies, and already sold over 1,000. I might make some money! Seriously, I hope to be working in some capacity on Voivod projects for years to come.”
I hope they carry on! That would be awesome!
I know it's sad that Piggy has died, but the band can carry on! Jason is an awesome musician and could probably contribute a great deal to songwriting!

I love ALL Voivod! It's all good. I like early thrash stuff and I like the more progressive stuff. There really isn't a Voivod album I don't like.

Agreed!
I've really been enjoying Infini, that's my favorite of the posthumous albums.

I really want to get all their stuff eventually.
Ult, where would you put "Katorz" in their catalogue? One of their better albums, or weaker ones?

Katorz is good, but there are quite a few I like better. So, somewhere in the middle. Dimension Hatross, Nothingface and Angel Rat are probably my favorites.

Angel Rat is NOT a fan favorite, just so you know. But knowing your varied taste in music, you may dig it. It's no where near as "metal" and "thrashy" as the other two I listed. More like dark rock and roll, if that makes sense.

Very cool. I am awaiting my copy of Infini in the mail.

If you end up liking "Angel Rat", check into it's follow-up, "The Outer Limits". It's also a fine release. Not quite as strong, and w/ Blacky kind of stepping out at that point & being a member only on the recording, it's not a "full band" release, per se, but it's still a very solid album.

Angel Rat really is like a heavy metal Rush bassically.

Voivod fans should see this...interview and live clips from a Canadian TV show. Includes live performances of Inner Combustion and Nothingface!

I love those tracks performed live, gives them an extra oomph that makes it a stunning experience. Yep, they're still the best.

Voivod is one of those bands I've always heard about and maybe heard a song or two from (like The Melvins). I always respected them and liked what I heard, but never bought an album. I think I am going to change that.
OK, so....should I go chronologically? Or cherry-pick different eras?

Can't really help you here cuz the only VoiVod I own is NOTHINGFACE and THE OUTER LIMITS, but I dig both of those for whatever it's worth.
My brother is the bigtime VoiVod fanboy in the family and though he likes pretty much everything they've done, I know his faves have always been KILLING TECHNOLOGY and DIMENSION HATROSS, he's been bugging me to get my own copies of those two for years now.

I am probably going to go against the grain here but I would recommend their MCA years, 'Angel Rat', 'The Outer Limits' and 'Nothingface'. Most peps would recommend their earlier material (which is good but very raw) but IMO these albums featured the band at the height of its creative peak.

OK, so I've been YouTube-ing Voivod on my phone...many of the videos won't play, but I got a couple to play from Angel Rat & now one from The Outer Limits and I am digging it...cool stuff!

I'm in agreement with Manny. Their early stuff is too raw and noisy for my taste. As they progressed, they sound more in control of their instruments and vocals and developed their unique sound. I even like their last few albums, which leans more towards hard rock oppossed to metal. I'm pretty sure Angel Rat was my introduction to the band. It's not a very popular release, but I like it.

"Brainscan" was cool...not too terribly different from the Angel Rat & Outer Limits songs I heard...
