THAT, is a good question my friend. I honestly do not know. Like you said, most of the guys were from Living Sacrifice or other bands and I believe SE started as a side project. We need Ult or somebody to fill us in their history. They melt though.

Fear Factory - Soul of A New Machine (not really old-school, but they don't fit elsewhere)
Someone else finally mentioned this death metal classic. Unfortunatly they got lumped with all the Nu-Metal bands due to the industrial influence and lack of guitar solos. Great album! I don't really see any Nu in it, except that yelling intro in "Big God - Raped Souls" which reminds me of Slipknot, overall it sounds much similar to Thrash Well of course, Nu didn't even exist at that time. But when they released the cover of Cars, the sound they developed was similar to Nu so they got lumped into it when they had no real no connection to the Nu scene except heavy bass. It's just that not many people knew of FF until then and had no idea their roots were in death metal.

| Yes, you are correct. Fear Factory is really a death metal band - with industrial overtones. Some bands are more industrial with metal overtones (like Rammstein, Ministry and KMFDM). These bands aren't really metal, but industrial. Fear Factory is truly metal though. | |

| I'm bringing this thread back up because I want to explore Death Metal a little more. Nothing symphonic or overtly technical...just straight up, blast-beat Death Metal with lyrics other than gore-porn style....these bands look interesting:
Kataklysm Hypocrisy Vader
These are bands I've heard before and want to explore further:
Death Suffocation Grave Pestilence Dismember |

| Vader is stellar, straight-ahead DM, you can't go wrong with anything in their catalog. DeProfundis and Litany are the recommended starting points, but really, they've never put out a bad album. You might also want to check out XXV, which is them re-recording their "greatest hits".
Hypocrisy is more melodeath, but their earlier albums are closer to straight ahead DM. The Forth Dimension, S/T, and the new one, A Taste of Extreme Divinity, are good touchstones for their evolution, soundwise.
If you like Suffocation, you'll probably like Immolation.
If you like Grave and Dismember, check out early Unleashed. Hail of Bullets as well.
Death...what can I say about Death that hasn't already been said? My favorite from them is Human. What a monster of album. But every single thing they've ever put out is fantastic. Keep in mind though that everything from Human onward isn't really classic"Death Metal" per se, but more along the lines of progressive, technical metal with some DM elements and flavor. I guess you can call it "Tech Death", but in my mind that sells it short.

I believe that falls under his label of gore-porn. Nile is a good death metal band I recently got into. They use some Egyptian instruments but only to add atmosphere to the music. The lyrics are mostly about Egypthian and other ancient mythology.

| I got in the new The Chasm in Saturday, and man is it a scorcher! Killer epic death metal that has melodies one would earlier hear in a classic heavy metal or thrash song than on a death metal disc. True melodic death metal, not at all like the melodic Gothenburg stuff (which I hate with a passion). | |

| I BUILT THE CROSS is a new band with a new album from Reno, NV. They are with Open Grave Records. I'm really diggin' them. They are brutal, chaotic and really crunchy. The guitar is great and the vocals are totally brutal. Check 'em out: http://www.myspace.com/ibuiltthecross | |

I wrote this genre off decades ago. Unless you like vocals that go "WOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH", you can pretty much pass on death metal.
Some talented musicians no doubt but the vocals are a dealbreaker for me. Toho and I share the same brain on this particular subject. But anyways... never been a big death metal guy, though my brother was (and still is) HUGE into the scene when we were growing up, so I heard lots-n-lots of it around the house back in the day... my bro was the fan club/P.O. Box/mail order merch guy for Incantation for a couple of years when they were still Jersey based early in their careers, John McEntee is still a good friend of his. (If you ever ordered a demo tape, 7-inch single, or t-shirt from Incantation from their P.O. Box in Paramus, NJ circa 89-91, my brother was the guy who sent it out to you!) So obviously I heard a whole lot of Incantation, plus their related bands (Regurgitation a.k.a. Old Lady Drivers, Mortician, Revenant, Immolation, etc.) back then... I even attended a few DM shows with him over the years. Saw Morbid Angel circa '90 when ALTARS OF MADNESS was still only available in the US as an import, VERY impressive band...it was like standing in front of an oncoming freight train... either jump on board or get outta the way!! I also saw Obituary with him around the same time period and they blew the roof off the joint!! In almost every case though, I would go home thinking "Wow, those guys were pretty killer," I'd borrow a couple of their tapes from my bro and listen to'em and could never get off on it via album. There must've been something about being there live and in person I guess. I attended a multi-band death metal festival with him years back ("Deathstock '94" at the old Wetlands Preserve club in NYC) and saw a whooooole buncha bands in one day, I can't even remember half of the names anymore... but the ones that stuck out were Order From Chaos (friends of my bro's, from Kansas City, the vocalist went on to form Angelcorpse after OFC broke up)...they were insane, the singer did a fire breathing stunt at the end of their set that would've done Gene Simmons proud! -- and Macabre (the band who sing exclusively about serial killers). Anyone else dig them? I gotta say Macabre was one of the funniest, yet most unsettling, live bands I've ever witnessed. They totally don't give a f*ck if you like them or not. They came out on stage and chanted "ZODIAC! ZO-DI-AC! ZOOOOO-DIIIII-AAAAAC!" for what seemed like five minutes before finally launching into their first song about the Zodiac Killer (duh). They also performed odes to Richard Speck, the Boston Strangler, yadda yadda yadda. The lyrics were sick and wrong but they were also hilarious, I felt kinda dirty laughing at them. What creeped me out was the singer had this deranged grin on his face the entire time... I remember thinking "Dude, I betcha this guy knows where a few bodies are buried himself..." So I guess what I'm tryin' to say is though I've never been much of a death metal guy but I did give it a fair shot and like Toho, I appreciate the skills many of these bands have... _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

the second fan on the board. Yes! New one is great. I love The Chasm. This is a band to get into further down the road, however, re: Pelata. But I second the Vader and Pestilence nominations for stuff to start getting into.

Anyone heard the new Nile album? The opening song is one of the most brutal death metal pieces I've heard in recent memory.
