| Since almost everyone is suggesting bands, I'll suggest some awesome death metal albums: Bolt Thrower-The IV Crusade Amorphis-Tales From The Thousand Lakes Opeth-My Arms Your Hearse Fear Factory-Soul Of A New Machine (heads up there are no guitar solos but it's still a fine album) Obituary-The End Complete Daath-The Hinderers Ethereal Scourge-Judgement And Restoration Soul Embraced-This Is My Blood Novembers Doom-Pale Haunt Departure (a little on the doom side but more death metal than most death/doom bands) Extol-Burial | |

| Apparently all the death metal bands I like aren't even death metal. I guess this is a genre I can completely write off. | |

I wrote this genre off decades ago. Unless you like vocals that go "WOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH", you can pretty much pass on death metal. Some talented musicians no doubt but the vocals are a dealbreaker for me. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Some talented musicians no doubt but the vocals are a dealbreaker for me. I kinda get where you're coming from. Most death metal bores me, but there's a couple of bands that I really, really like. Like Arghoslent, haha. If those guys weren't a bunch of racist dickwads they'd be the next big thing in metal.

| On my side, without a doubt, I'd say Edge of Sanity.
Their first two have that rather classic old-school Swedish sound, but they adopted a more progressive and melodic approach afterwards culminating in the awesome "Crimson" album - one song, 40 minutes long.
Other people have mentioned albums instead of bands, so I'll do the same.
On the old-school side :
Entombed - Left Hand Path Entombed - Clandestine Dismember - Like An Everflowing Stream Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade Morbid Angel - Covenant Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness Fear Factory - Soul of A New Machine (not really old-school, but they don't fit elsewhere) Deicide - Once Upon the Cross Master - On The Seventh Day God Created ... Master Pungent Stench - For God Your Soul ... For Me Your Flesh
honorable mentions to Benediction, Napalm Death, Malevolent Creation and Obituary.
On the more melodic side :
Carcass - Necroticism (OK, not too melodic, but still ...) Carcass - Heartwork In Flames - Subterranean In Flames - The Jester Race Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery (or should I say, all their discography) Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul Death - Symbolic Death - Individual Thought Patterns Sentenced - North From Here Edge of Sanity - Crimson Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow Arch Enemy - Black Earth Arch Enemy - Stigmata Septic Flesh - The Ophidian Wheel Septic Flesh - Mystic Places of Dawn Hypocrisy - The Fourth Dimension Hypocrisy - Abducted Hypocrisy - The Final Chapter Night in Gales - Towards The Twilight Sacrilege - The Fifth Season
then the more technical side :
Atheist - Piece of Time Atheist - Unquestionable Presence Cryptopsy - None So Vile Cynic - Focus Gorguts - Considered Dead Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity Nile - Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka Nocturnus - The Key
the black/death hybrid :
Dissection - The Somberlain Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane Naglfar - Diabolical
the infamous "death'n'roll" :
Entombed - Wolverine Blues Grave - Soulless
and finally, death/thrash :
Death - Human Death - Leprosy Death - Scream Bloody Gore Obliveon - Nemesis Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum Pestilence - Consuming Impulse Sepultura - Beneath The Remains Sepultura - Arise Slaughter - Strappado
Im not even mentioning the newer bands.

| I listened to some of the "borderline" bands back in the day: Death, Possessed, Sepultura.
I also like some Athiest, early Morbid Angel, Obituary.
I've become a major Opeth fan, but I don't really classify them as death metal. More like a progressive rock band with death metal elements thrown in. |
