| I don't know if i can still rely on metal mags reviews. I recently picked up Lamb of God's WRATH, after reading a very positive review about it, in one of the major british metal mags. The album turned out to be complete crap. Wrath is just an example. There are so many other disappointments. | |

Wrath is just an example. There are so many other disappointments. Well with reviews you can't really trust, I think one has make that judgement for themselves. One mag may praise a cd for how good it is and another for how band it is. Sometimes they can be spot on but for the most part I think they are close if they are any good at listening too and then reviewing them. I for one hate reviewing them because I'm not good at explaining! But I agree on LOG garbage! But then again commercial bands like that don't interest me! Wargod50

| Always good to sample the songs online first. This is 2009, reviews are good for pointing you in the right direction, but they mean nothing next to heading over to MySpace Music and experiencing the sounds for yourself.
If a band doesn't have a few samples on MySpace, they're just pitiful.

| I try to read several reviews of an album (especially if it's by a band I'm not familiar with) before buying. Just cuz one schmuck sez "this album RULES!" doesn't make his opinion the be-all and end-all.
If you find a site or a 'zine you read regularly, sooner or later you'll come to familiarize yourself with a particular writer (or writers) whose tastes are similar to your own and use their reviews as a guide as well.
Then again, as the saying goes, opinions are like a-holes, everyone's got one and most of'em stink.... _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| Sort of what Freddy said!
As an album reviewer myself, I always review an album the first time I listen to it. I sometimes ask or read other peoples opinions to make sure I am not totally out in left field with my thoughts or comments, but my advice is to read thru several magazines or webzines and see who you agree with or seem to have about the same musical beliefs with and go with it from there.
Stay away from crap like Spin, and Rolling Stone their writers are not musicians and they for the most part do not know crap when it comes to music. Better choices are Amp, Ap, Decibel, Outburn, and Terrorizer.
