- I respect everyone's opinion on Sotomayor's confirmation. But the "wise Latina" comment echoed over and over through the years gives me serious pause.
Well that's different you are expressing an opinion and objection to what her viewpoint maybe, you not expressing disapproval because she is Latina. Anyway I do have to agree to a certain extent with TZ, sometimes we get so PC, everybody's afraid to express an opinion afraid of offending someone. When it comes to politics and all things related, I have no party affiliation, no racial bias, no religious bias... I simply want the person who I think is most qualified for the job. I have no problem with Ms. Sotomayor's race, I really couldn't care less. What I object to is that she apparently thinks that her heritage imbues her with some judicial knowledge non-Latinas lack. THAT I find offensive. Now that she's officially a Supreme Court Justice, I'm ready to wipe the slate clean and see what she says and does from here. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I wonder if she will have any significant impact, as someone pointed out the balance of the court will remain unchanged and she is now the junior justice, I am sure as the years go on she will have a significantly greater role but that I predict will not be for several years. | |

I think I pointed that out. She's replacing a justice appointed by Bush The First who ended up being a liberal judge so I agree, I don't think her opinions will change the court's decision much. But it will be interesting to see how she votes on specific issues. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| My final judgment:
Good for her, but I hope she wasn't selected because of race.
Now, a bigger threat to American politics is the election of actors and comedians. Al Franken is the biggest horse's patoot this side of the Mississippi.

| Cool, you've just proved my point, you're lumping ME into a stereotype now. Do you know me? Have we sat down and talked about my philosophical, ethical, political and religious views?
No. We haven't. However, you've managed to peg me as a "bleeding heart liberal".
In my opinion, making that judgment about me puts you in the sfincter stereotype. |

He's from Minnesota, the state that also made Jesse Ventura governor. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

In my opinion, making that judgment about me puts you in the sfincter stereotype. Do i know you? Not really, but you are complaining about stereotypes which is why i commented. Btw... I quoted you but i didn't name any names when i suggested the liberal content on this thread. You are assuming i am singleing you out which i was not. You made a general assumption and i responded. What are the stereotypes you were refering to anyway?

You 'could' use a stereotype loose handedly in referrence to a very specific cultural/lifestyle habits, but that's as far as it goes and anything else is simply racism/sexism/ etc. (e.g. Damn fat n*gger ladies eating all that junk food with my money on their Lone Star Card)
I appologize if that example offended anyone, it became necessary to provide an example to clarify my points.
That particular example; while racist and biggoted in nature, has validity in background and frequency of occurance. That example has no validity whatsoever, calling someone an n word is not a description of a race or culture or anything at all, it is racist plan and simple. Your example was racist bullsh!t, label me PC if you want but whatever points you may have made before, they have now been made invalid. I am done with this thread.

Your example was racist bullsh!t, label me PC if you want but whatever points you may have made before, they have now been made invalid. I am done with this thread. You're simply mad at one particular word and completely ignored the other 90% of the example I used. The Lone Star Card (aka WELFARE!) is typically seen with black American woman who easily weigh over 250 lbs! It's a frequent occurrence that I see nearly where ever I go in the state of Texas. My example, while possessing a derogatory word has solid validity. That is how that 'label' was formed in the first place, from occurrences of (typically) lifestyle habits that happen to associate with that race. That is the DEFINITION of a stereotype. You can (get mad) all you want at a particular word that ultimately is user-defined. While typically that word has been used just for a "race", it's not just their skin color. It also is in reference to lifestyles, habits, etc. I use that term with my friends in reference to a particular lifestyle. I have no problem with black people/ black Americans, etc. Be PC all you want, usually it's people trying to be PC that result in being hypocrites (calling a black person an "African American" when he's not from Africa; which also neglects the fact that black people are not exclusively from Africa also.) I clearly understand not using the commonly used slang vernacular in the form of derogatory terms. I'm sorry you took offense to this, I will not, however, apologize for saying it. (Not that this post matters any, you probably think I'm a stereotypical redneck racist by using that word, seeing as you ignored the rest of the point being conveyed over a slang.)
