Norton should do it. But just use it to clean and fix. Don't install all it's crap to manage your computer. Just Norton Antivirus.

To be honest the only anti virus that used to work was PANDA from Staples, but Mackaffe still have led some big viruses to get on my computer.

I recommend you before anything to get all of your data stored.dvd data,external hard drives, and pictures cds. Then do a system recovery, and you have to use the option where it has to delete everything from the computer. This at least makes the virus to stop working, and deletes it. :dnd:

It could be one that doesn't go away with any system. I've had viruses in times past that neither Norton nor the Geek Squad's systems could fix and had to start all over again. This is especially true it it's a Trojan Horse or any other type of worm. Norton has proven, at least to me, to be wortless with big worms and viruses.

I use AVG but I actually bought the program for $50 and it cleaned up the virus right away where as the free one wouldnt. I also used SpyBot. Everythings fine now.

Well, here's my 2 cents worth. Spybot search and destroy is pretty good. First of all, is it a virus or mallware? If it's spyware or mallware, did you install the program? If so go into control panel and delete the program. Then try running spybot. There's other stuff out there but it's going to cost you money. If that doesn't work they you might just have to restore your computer to it's factory state, assuming you didn't build your computer from scratch. (I hope you have more that one hard disk or that you backed up all your stuff. If not it might be too late to do so now. I'm assuming that you can't access the internet. That seems to be where most attacks come from now days. At least that seems to be what I experience when my kids bring their computers to me for fixing. I always cringe when that happens and I look at the stuff they have installed.)

After that get rid of windows altogether and install Linux. Well you can't get rid of Windows altogether yet, because you need to be able to download a Linux image (iso) and burn it to a CD or DVD whichever you need. You might also want to download Img Burn and burn the image a the lowest speed possible. I suggest either Ubuntu or Mint. You get great support from the Ubuntu forums and Mint is just a lot easier for you to get everything up and running. With Ubuntu you will need to install some packages to read MP3's and watch DVD's with Mint you can skip that entire process as they have already done it for you. And Linux is FREE.

There are lots of other distrobutions out there, but your learning curve should be less when transitioning from Windows or Vista my experience is with most other distro's that all of the rest require either a lot or a little tweaking. For the time being, unless you really know what you are doing I would avoid either Gentoo or Slackware. I used to love PCLOS but now my system hates it. It likes Mint the best.

Mcafee sucks. It let's in viruses and slows down your computer. Try Spybot S&D. It's free, and it works pretty good. Also, I just now noticed that the person above me said the same thing. Well, the backspace button on my keyboard is broken (seriously), so too bad.

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty currently, but i have run everything... from Redhat (Fedora), Mandrake, Storm, & Xandros. i even run Solaris 10 unix on a computer. i still keep a couple of pc's running xp & vista for certain things, but they are not my main computers.

I tend to be a KDE person most of the time. But have run most of the other Desktop environments. My machine doesn't like the new PCLOS 2009, it gripes big time. I have to turn the computer off at the power supply if I want to reboot. I probably could solve that problem, but why should I when Jaunty works. I prefer Mint 7 it works right out of the box.

I just put Mint 7 KDE RC1 on my machine tonight for a test run. So far so good.

Used to be a distro junkie but recently I have been sticking with Ubuntu or Mint. I also never liked Ubuntu that much for some reason. Don't really know why, maybe it was the 'brown' that they used to have. Not a big fan of orange either. I know you can change your Desktop at will but first impressions make a big difference to me. I liked Mint right from the first time I installed it.

If I have to go with Microsoft, I think I prefer Vista over XP. Vista actually ran better on my machine that XP. But I have have a laptop with Vista on it and I don't think that I am going to mess with the OS on that machine.

i'm a Gnome guy at heart, but i like KDE too. Xfce is not one i dig into all to often.

haven't had the opportunity to install Mint as of yet... i'm sure it'll happen in time though.

as for Windows...i like Vista over XP as well. opposite of the majority. i think it just runs cleaner.
