His advice is correct. If you sing from your throat, you will lose your voice. You have to project from your diaphragm. Also, smokey clubs suck!

Yeah I have always wondered how vocalists handle smoke machines and cigratte smoke when they sing...just setting up for a band with a smoke machine going on stage makes it hard for me to breathe.

I've found strangely that my best guttural roars have come from a few brews.
I've gotten to teh point where I can grunt at the pitch of Chris Barnes in "Zero the Hero" (the Black Sabbath cover done by Cannibal Corpse) comfortably.

That even goes for high pitched metal singing too.
