The Death of The Stereo?

haven't used a stereo in a long time, I just hook my pod up to my PA system and blast.

Well I have 2 systems yet one in my living room the other in my bedroom. They are both hooked up but rarely used.

My living room has a Technics 200 watt digital surround reciever, Pioneer 25 disc cd changer, JVC dual tape deck, Pioneer cd burner, 2 Advent 200 watt speakers.

My bedroom has JVC 100 watt reciever, Pioneer 18 disc cd player, 2 100 watt Pioneer speakers.

Most of what I listen to is either on my comp, Ipod, or car palyer.

i still have mine hooked up. sony components- 100 watt receiver,5-disc cd changer,dual cassette deck.also an ion usb turntable connected to both stereo and computer, and klh 15" speakers. also have a magnavox 5 disc cd changer connected with y connectors to the receiver.

My stereo system finally died after 15 years of service, it did die a slow death first the tape deck went south, than the CD player died, and finally a few weekends ago my two boys, destroyed my turntable while I had my back turned, sad end to my stereo system that was so old you would have to carbon date it to find out its real age since I bought used to begin with.

My home system is a JVC 5.1 surround sound system - I listen to CD's on my blu-ray player (when I actually listen to music at home!), but that's it these days!!! I have an old JVC turntable, and the only place I can actually hook it up these days is to my computer.

Also have a Klipsch docking station for my Ipod - it sounds good! Crisp highs, good lows and from an Ipod!!!!! We compared the Klipsch to the Bose sound dock and the Klipsch is so much better - the bose is so highly processed, I prefer a more natural sound.

My home theater system is 9 years old, I plan to get a new one some day - like after I finish my basement have have an excuse to buy a new one!!!!

Yes, unfortunately they are going away. I hate the stupid book shelf systems that now dominate the market and I'm not the least bit fond of crappy MP3 systems. I don't care how good an MP3 file is, it will always be compressed and will not be the same quality as LPs and CDs.

I'm more concerned about my system in the vehicle, that's where I can crank it up!

That's why the industry needs to adopt FLAC files, they are compressed files but lossless (no audio information is removed for the compression). Once un-compressed they are identical to the original .wav files.

Also, rack systems aren't going away, they just aren't being carried by the "big box" retailers like Wal-Fart. There is tons of stereo equipment available from specialty catalogs and online.

I have two rack systems.I have a sony upstairs and a jvc downstairs complete with surround speakers.

Ha, I was just thinking about this last night as I was trying to fall asleep.

I couldn't care less about owning a stereo system. Car & computer work just fine for me, I don't lay on my bed staring at albums covers so I don't really need a legit system.

I have an old turntable (80's) that I use occasionally.

I mostly just play CD's on my PC and DVD Player.

I have an old rack (Aiawa) system upstairs at my main listening station where all the classic hard rock is kept. Thats got the turntable and burner, etc.
Then I have an even older rack system (Kenwood) downstairs in the living room where the stoner type music is.
I have a Sports room and there is a cheap 5.1 surround system for videos; but I also have a 300 disc changer hooked up in there that is full of prog and metal. It sounds OK to me.
I have a Bose clock radio cd player in my bedroom, and also some wireless speakers that can recieve the signal from the upstairs system if I want.
There is a six disc changer in my truck, which is mostly used for trying out new discs as I get them out of the mailbox.
This year I've put some of my playlists on laptop. Also put a bunch of music from the past decade on Ipod and I've been listening to that while working lately.
None of this is particularly high-end equiptment. I always wanted to have a great stereo, but I think it would be a waste now because frankly my ears are shot and I can't tell a crap system from a good one anymore.

I know technologies are supposed to have improved by leaps and bounds over the decades, but honestly the best stereos I ever heard were some of those that Navy guys and Vietnam vets brought back from tours of the Pacific in the early 70's. Those things had such a powerful vibrant sound (not sure which brands they were, but I knew a few guys who had them). You sure didn't need to mess around with sub-woofers or anything like that.

Nothing will ever beat that old analog sound.

Seriously. I don't think we're just being farts here. I've got new speakers and old speakers, new su-woofers and old sub-woofers, systems with equalizers, old add on equalilizers with levers. But no matter how I mess around I can't recreate the sound of those old stereos. I mean there is plently of insane house shaking punch available now; but the subtle bass that those old systems had just doesn't seem to be achievable. I remember the bass being very clear and effective even at very low volumes. Now no matter what I use there always seems to be a boomy quality to the texture.
It might be my ears I guess. That's entirely possible I suppose. But I don't think that's the whole problem.

I listen through my computer, MP3 Player, and car stereo. When I get new CDs I will listen to my dad's 5 Disc CD player until I have them put into my computer. I just don't like to fish through all my CDs when I want to listen to them and the computer has them all right there at the click of a mouse. It helps to have good speakers connected to your computer, they're not that expensive especially if you have no qualms about going to Wal-Mart.

I agree about the "old fart" thing. I'm just old enough to have been raised on records and 8-tracks and my first music purchases were records. I don't care what anyone says, they just sound better.

They weren't as sterile. A lot of it has to do with the equipment used to record also.

All mine is hooked up...including my 50CD changer...I use that sometimes still, but mostly run my iPod thru it when I'm cleaning the house, etc...
