The Death of The Stereo?

I just realized that I listen to music on computers and car stereos all day. Who here has a good old fashioned rack system stereo in their house? Not a surround sound system that is meant for DVDs. The real deal 3 or 4 component thingamabob. I feel these systems are going the way of the compact disc. Am I wrong?

I still have all of my stereo equipment, but it's currently not hooked up. That's because, I'm sort of in transition, and living with an old high school buddy. Were ripping that hell out of his upstairs area that I'm occupying. God willing, if we ever get it done, all of my stuff will get hooked up. I get tired of using my computer as an outlet all of the time. I listen to the radio in the car every once in a while, but get easily bored with it, so in goes the C.D.

Unfortunately stereo systems will one day be obsolete as well. Sadly, this is another instance where advancements in technology are unfortunate. My brother has a wireless setup where he plays all of his music through Itunes out to any and every room in the house. Which means, its Itunes or bust. I can't imagine getting a rid of my tuner, since sometimes I like to check out what's on the airwaves.

I still have the same Pioneer amp and speakers that I bought in 1985. It was part of a cabinet with turntable, reciever, and tape player (the former 3 are long gone)It still rocks hard, though. To this day Ive never turned the volume higher than halfway cuz it is loud but clear as well. Ive had a few Pioneer systems in my life and I think they make a great stereo system and speakers, as far as old school goes. Probably cant hold a candle to the "modern" style stereos but after 24 years Ive never blown the amp or the speakers so I guess it must be good.

I bought a Sansui system w/Yamaha speakers when I was in Okinawa, it's all rubbish now. I have an Optimus 5 CD changer and an Onkyo reciever, but no speakers. I want a pair of Bose 901's, almost bought them in Okinawa but didn't want to spend the $ at the time. For now I listen to my music on a JVC shelf system, sounds pretty good w/the sub woffer.

My last stereo system died late last year. The wife and I received it as a wedding present in 1999. I haven't replaced it yet. Most of the time when I listen to music I'm either in the car or at work. On the rare occasion that I do listen to CDs around the house, I can just play'em in my DVD player. Kinda sucks that I no longer have a turntable, but I couldnt tell ya the last time I spun any of my old vinyl LPs anyway.

Back in 1975, my cousin brought me a JVC component stereo system from Japan. He was there after leaving Vietnam. It was a tuner, tape deck, and turntable. He also gave me a bag of tubes for the tuner. He had sold the speakers. I still have the system and it works great. Had to change a few tubes and replace a needle cartridge. The kewl thing is it has speaker A and B ports with the option of using all 4 at once or just two. I don't think it is actually true quadrophonic ? but when you have four huge speakers in each corner of the room and you blast an album while kicking it in the middle... well it is great.

The current speakers I have hooked up are Pioneer. Thrift store finds that all have three speakers in the cabinet but all are different. All four are a lil under three foot tall. I also have this lil box that changes colors with the vibration of the music.

My amp also has an A/B speaker selection, that was designed primarily so that you could run speakers into another room and then select which set you want on.

It would only be actually quadrophonic if all 4 speakers were getting a separate channel (instead of the normal 2 for stereo).

My stereo is on it's last legs. The turn-table crapped out years ago, I haven't used the dual tape deck in God knows how long ago and in the last year or so, the cd tray keeps getting stuck. It still works, but I usually have to hit it on the side like Fonzie to get it to work. Oh, and the right speaker died around Christmas time.

I've had the stereo part since I was a teen and added the Sony cd player back in the mid-90's. It had a good run, but I'm looking at new systems. I'll probably get something new this summer.

I got a surround sound but it doesnt have a built in DVD player. Each thing I own is plugged into it. I rarely listen to music home unless im not going anywhere and I know i'll be home for a while to clean or take a quick nap. Sometimes I'll listen to music while I play a video game. I never listen to music on my computer unless im transfering it to my ipod so I can sample it out first or for my radio show. I have two boom-boxes, like Schpoopoo has, but I hardly ever use them. Sooner or later, your TVs are going to disappear. I can watch and record TV shows on my PC with XP Media Center. I just need to buy a $69 cable to hook my cable box to the back of my PC. Suffice it to say, that ain't happening any time soon.

But it will happen. TV is already transitioning to the internet. Before we pass on, TV shows, movies, music, all that, will be accessed through a PC.

I have an early 80's Pioneer tuner & amp pushing 2 15 inch with tweeters & an adjustable midrange speakers with a Magnavox single disc CD player I bought in 1989. It sounds awesome. This rig has real wood in it. The stuff Metal is meant to be heard through.

I am sorry to say I dont have a rad system like you guys, I've always figured I should spend my money on new tunes before I go broke on a stereo...considering how many albums there are that I dont have, I'll probably never own a good stereo in my lifetime.

I still have Infinity speakers that are pieces of furniture. I have a Sony amplifier,Sony carousel CD player, a Phillips CD duplicator, Kenwood EQ and an MTX subwoofer.

The whole system is about 20 years old but the damn Infinitys refuse to die. I have a DVD player hooked into the auxilliary input on the amp since this system is in my weight room and I watch TV while I'm on the eliptical but it's really a stereo system.

I have Infinity speakers in my car too. I swear by that brand of speakers.

Yes. I've heard that if you want your ass rocked, then Kenwood is for you.

But back to what you said before Eyesore... You really think that people would rather watch tv on their little computer screens than watch it on tv? I guess it could happen. Its sort of being done now but I dont think tvs will ever be completely gone.

I still own a Phillips set up. I still play CD's on it because sometimes someone else is using the computer and frankly the quality of sound is still better on a CD than a hard drive. imo....

I listen to music on my computer often, but still like to crank up my Phillips... all 100 watts..!!!

Yes stereo's will be gone as it is now you really have to go to a specialist shop and I'm not talkin 'bout Best Buy !!!.....

Anyway, yes, I think TVs will become more and more obsolete. You have to look beyond what a PC is now to understand. Houses will be equipped with central computer systems. You'll have big screens, just like TVs, but they'll essentially be what we currently call monitors. Rich people already have this stuff.

These LCD flat screen TVs are just glorified computer monitors with built in HD tuners. Most HDTV's have VGA inputs, so you can plug your computer or laptop into them...don't even have to be mega-rich for that if you already have the TV.

Me too, I have 4 Pioneers speakers that are 3 ft tall in 4 corners of my downstairs in my house. I still havent bought into the modern miniature speaker theory (although I wish I had some Bose speakers, maybe someday). I like em big and I like em loud. Power and clarity. THAT is metal.
I think these modern wal-mart cookie cutter stereo systems are wussy and I just cant find the right sound, even when I bring my own cd's into the store to test them on.
