I accidentally fell on billy idol's best-of when organizing my musical library. So, i listened to "shot to the system", a song i last heard over 12 years ago.
Now, this freakin' rocks. Can this guy be somehow labeled metal?

Nope. Not even if you tried.
His last album was pretty good, though.

Not metal in the slightest, but Billy had some good pop/rock hits back in the day.

No he can't be labeled metal or even punk despite his roots but a great vocalist and songwriter.

His previous band "Generation X" was pretty much punk ... when he went solo he got the "punk" label in the media mainly because of his 'tude and his spiked hair do.

I love Billy Idol, and I'm glad you liked his last album, but I absolutely hated it. I wanted to like it so badly, but just couldn't get into it. I assume you're talking about him album "Devil's Playground"? If not, I'm sorry for ripping on his "Happy Holidays" album.

While he had some really great songs and some pretty good songs, I could never get into this guy. And I don't know why. Never owned anything by him. Thought of getting his greatest hits, but never pulled the trigger. Oh well.

You should get Generation X's Valley Of The Dolls......one of my fave records. Blurs the line Glam/Punk/Heavy Metal/Power Pop.........sleazy guitars and sun shiney melodies, not unlike Hanoi Rocks who they no doubt influenced.......

Not to a classic eighties metal dude, for even a New York minute. He did some pretty killer guitars for a pop dude, but metal?? Even CeCe Deville could play a few killer guitar licks back then. In the days of metal guitar virtuosos like Schenker, Yngwie, George Lynch, etc., he was not metal. Bryan Adams also did some decent guitar solos, but was certainly not metal. Until Nirvana came along and lowered the bar, you had to play a kick ass guitar to be considered metal. Remember, even Beat It had a cool metal guitar solo in the middle, courtesy of Eddie VH. Diamond Dave was also pretty pissed at Eddie for playing on this, because Eddie was not paid to play this solo.

If you want to see what Billy would sound like metal listen to Vince Neils exposed. Just imagine Idol singing the tunes. Steve Stevens never let loose in Idol and I always wondered why, he has huge abilities.

The reason is because it is Billy Idol's solo career so he calls the shots, it is his name on the marquee, and it was the only one who signed on the dotted line, Steve Stevens was a hired gun, a talented hired gun, but a hired gun. Stevens has said so in many many interviews, Vince Neil on the other hand is an untalented tool who happens to sing in key after 900 takes so he needed a guiding hand.

Im not praising Neil all I am saying is that Idol should've went this direction. Even though I like most of his releaes. Neil on the other hand while not a great singer, had huge success and fronted an extremely popular band. I wouldn't say 900 times but maybe as many times as he has been married. As far as being an untalented tool, the man lived the rock star dream and thats more then most talented people can say. I'm with you though not a great singer.

Plenty of un-talented tools have made millions and lived the rock and roll lifestyle...this seems to have been especially prominent during the 80's.
More power to them, I'm happy they got lucky enough to achieve the success they did...that still won't stop me from calling "bullsh*t" if someone brings up their supposed musical talent.

Luck or hard work I don't know what one it is. All I know is that a lot of people get the big break and a chance for people to hear there music. I totally respect them as artists for that. That has always been my dream and I still pursue it to this day.
