Considering an album or two from Bathory. Is this a worthwhile endeavor?

Of course!
Blood Fire Death, Hammerheart, and Twilight of the Gods are essential. Those albums birthed the genre "Viking Metal". So awesome!

i prefer the self titled debut, The Return, & Under the Sign of the Black Mark. the earlier stuff was more raw & primal.

I am listening to Bathory's first album right now. Agreed, it is pretty raw. I didn't know what to expect the vocals aren't at all like some of the other black metal I have heard. I will be checking out more.

i'm glad to hear that. Bathory is more than just black, viking or thrash metal. Bathory transcends all that.

There was almost a kind of punk-ish feel to the early stuff.

I am not familiar with any of their albums. Need to start somewhere.

I'd say Blood Fire Death and Under the Sign of the Black Mark are the best places to start.

The first 3 are blackened punk metal perfection. The viking stuff is a little cheesy.

Under the Sign of the Black Mark is a trippy album cover.

A few years ago, I mailed Scott a copy of Under the Sign of the Black Mark for his birthday (along with some other albums).
Here is the video where he opens the package.

I remember seeing this one. As a matter of fact, i love videos where packages are being opened.
On a funny side note, every time i happen to revisit an old video, i notice how old we are getting. For example, Rene Holspa (known as Krokus on this board) has aged quite well!
