Bodhisattva? thats the one some killer musicianship in that song Hellfreakin'yeah!!!!!! Check out Reelin' In The Years and My Old School for more great musicianship. Reeling In The Years is easily my favorite Steely Dan song. Unbelievable guitar work. Top 10 favorite Steely Dan songs 1. Reeling In The Years 2. Josie 3. Peg 4. Rikki Don't Lose That Number 5. Do It Again (even though Fagen hates this song) 6. Hey Nineteen 7. Deacon Blues 8. Pretzel Logic 9. FM 10. My Old School I hated the fact that this band hardly ever toured. Donald Fagen stated that they could never capture the sound of the studio. Well no smurf poo, join the crowd.

That's not far from what I would list for them. I had them all on vinyl, but I never updated to CD beyond "Gold" and Fagan's "Nightfly". They were once my very favorite band. I still like them a lot, but I'm never in a relaxed mood anymore.

- Are there any Steely Dan fans here? I became a big fan in high school in the 80's. The only station that played metal occasionally here in El Paso was also our classic rock station, and Steely Dan was featured frequently. I am a fan of their instrumental skills and their song writing. Some of my metal friends were not too fond of them... I had a friend that would tell me they were too "Jazzy". But, for my money, "Aja" is still one of the best "headphone" discs out there... especially if you have an old phono player and a set of those nice, big helicopter-style headphones. Sweet.
I'm a fan. Like you, I got into them in high school in the late 80's because I heard a lot of them on the local rock station. Along with Jethro Tull's Original Masters, a Steely Dan album I used to own on cassette was one of the first two albums I bought. I can't remember which album this was, but it had "Kid Charlemagne", "No Static At All", "When Black Friday Comes", and "Bodhisahtvaa" (I'm guessing on the spelling of that one!!). My favorite tune on this album, as well as my all-time favorite Steely Dan song, is "Bodhisahtvaa". While I was totally impressed and blown away by the Dan's instrumentals, I was also intrigued by their lyrics as a teen. I didn't know that black Friday was a certain shopping day back then, so I was pretty intrigued by the idea of catching grey men falling from the fourteenth floor

| I love Steely Dan, great musicianship. My favorite songs by them are Dirty Work and Reelin in the Years. A few months ago I bought an album called Android Warehouse that contained demos and lost songs by them from about 68 - 71. It has some tracks that made it to some of their albums, but it also contains a lot of tracks that have never seen the light of day. Unfortunately the band disowns the album, because its not an official release, but if you like Steely Dan I highly recomend this album and it's pretty cheap, used. | |

I know I heard "Cyber Monday" last Christmas season, so it's at least that old. Black Friday's been around for as long as I can remember. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Cyber Monday has been around since ealier this decade, the day when everybody goes back to work and shops on their computers at work! As far as Steely Dan, I just know the songs played on the radio - I'll have to see if I find some used CD's. From what I know about the band, I would prefer to listen to whole albums by them as opposed to a "greatest hits" album

| If you're looking for a good "full album" introduction to Steely Dan you can't go wrong with Pretzel Logic. Not only does it contain quite a few hits, but it also explores the soul and jazz influences more fully than their first couple albums. |

Not only does it contain quite a few hits, but it also explores the soul and jazz influences more fully than their first couple albums. I'd second that. Although I'd still recommend the Citizen Dan box set because that has all the worthwhile tracks IMO, hits and non-hits alike. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Actually, now that I reviewed the respective track lists again, I'd recommend Can't Buy A Thrill over Pretzel Logic. The first four songs are great, then an "eh" song, followed by Reelin' In The Years. This would be my favorite Steely Dan album. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| If I were you, Id get the Royal Scam first. Thats my personal favorite, not a bad song on it. If you wanted to go with the artists opinion, The Dan has been known to say that Countdown To Ecstasy is their favorite. You know, Im still waiting for that Dallas single to come to CD. I was just thinking about that today | |

Don't Take Me Alive, one of their best songs. That IS one of my favorite SD songs. The music doesn't really match the dark lyrics at all which always intrigues me. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Oh, man...that's one of my favorites. Notice what album that's from??? Yep, "Can't Buy A Thrill". Great album, probably my second favorite. But nothing can top The Royal Scam for me. The trilogy of Kid Charlamagne, The Caves Of Altamira, and Don't Take Me Alive has always wowed me.

| I think "Kings" is another vastly underrated song from CBAT. I've always loved that song. I also have fond memories of cruising with a certain female while listening to that song which obviously colors my opinion. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Steely Dan has slowly but surely been inching themselves into my "favorite band of all-time" slot (haven't quite gotten there, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest). They have been a constant presence in my life since my pre-teen years and my appreciation just continues to grow year by year.
Desert island music for me without a doubt.
