| I didnot take the geographical ascept into a account, so thank you for sharing your point of view, when I was in my early teens magazines like Hit Parader and Circus were one of the few main stream press that covered metal, and they of course mostly focused on the glam/hair metal simply because they helped sell more copies, so I also think why some of these bands such as Poison and Bon Jovi were classified as metal when in reality they had little in common with Deep Purple or Black Sabbath, and IMO had more in common with Slade, The Sweet, and to a small extent T.Rex. | |

Songs that define metal: Queensryche - Queen of the Ryche Accept - Fast As A Shark Black Sabbath - Neon Knights Iron Maiden - Wratchild Judas Priest - Delivering the Goods Metallica - Whiplash Megadeth - Peace Sells... Stryper - Surrender Dio - Holy Diver Nice list, interesting also to note that only 1 song on the list came out prior to 1980. Like you said, ask me again in a few minutes and my list would probably change. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| I agree with Ult's definition I know that topic has been hashed out a million times but I think that no one person can tell you what is and what is not metal, I think in a sense its a personal definition, Like im sure peeps might disagree with my list but my list is what it is for me based on exposure and what not. I think that there can be a general consensus like with bands Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, etc... Ult you said that if you were asked in 10 mins it would probobly change, Im surprised you havent listed any Aerosmith | |

Blue Oyster Cult- Don't Fear The Reaper Interesting. I would have picked one of BOC's heavier songs, like Godzilla or Cities on flame with rock and roll.

- My term of what heavy metal is very broad, I consider Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, and AC/DC I consider heavy metal bands, as I do Quiet Riot, Ratt, and Motley Crue, even some bands that are sometimes listed as alternative I consider metal such as Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains even Rammstein.
Nothing wrong with that as many metal magazines include the latter bands you named in them as well. Being as I love everything from hair metal to hardcore/punk I like this. Now to my list: Ozzy - Shot in the Dark Dream Theater - Pull Me Under Vain - 1000 Degrees Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Queensryche - The Killing Words Testament - Return to Serenity Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell Iron Maiden - Caught Somewhere in Time Metal Church - Metal Church Def Leppard - Mirror, Mirror (Look Into My Eyes)

| I have seen the name Vain for years, but never heard any of their music, I amushed they were another hair metal band but I have seen Classic Rock Magazine gave them a good write up when one of their albums was reissued, I will have to go on Youtube when I get out of work and check them out.

"Return to Serenity" is a great song, but surprised to see anyone pick a Testament ballad as a song that defines metal. Also surprised to see your choice in Def Leppard songs. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

Well in all honesty the Testament song was chosen simply because it's always been my favorite from them. If I was to chose a little harder song it would've probably been either Electric Crown, Nightmare (Coming Back to You) or Henchmen Ride. Probably still unusual choices, hey? I'm pretty known for that. As far as the Leppard song goes I've always liked it a lot but lately I've been playing Icarus Witch's version a lot and just really like it a lot. I couldn't name a band doing a cover song in good faith so I gave Leppard all of the credit. Hope this helps you understand my not so normal choices. By the way I've never claimed to be very normal anyway.

| Not to derail the thread with more debate on what is/isn't metal, I can tell you that when I was a kid growing up (in the 70's) I never heard the term heavy metal. The term "Hard Rock" was how they described the stuff on the radio and that's what my stepfather called it whenever he was complaining about me listening to Kiss or Queen...
I didn't start really hearing the term "heavy metal" being used frequently until the early 80's came around and you started seeing Judas Priest and Iron Maiden videos on HBO's Video Jukebox. The term heavy metal also seemed to go along with a certain visual look (leathers, spikes, etc). When all the pop/glam stuff started coming out (Bon Jovi, Poison, Ratt, Motley Crue, etc) there was no way in hell that I was going to call that heavy metal...and I usually blasted anyone that tried to put those bands in the same category as Motorhead or Venom.
In my "completely personal opinion", the following bands are Hard Rock...not metal: Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Foghat, Thin Lizzy, Jimi Hendrix, etc.
On the other hand: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Venom, Slayer, Savatage, etc are all CLEARLY metal bands.
To take it further into the music of today:
Bands that aren't metal include: Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, King's X, Wolfmother, Graveyard, Witchcraft, etc. etc. |
