Saw them in the early 80's alot and my neck still hurts
I stopped listening in 86' and never gave them a second thought...redundant is a good word to apply, I suppose ? Seems after reading some of the things posted 'bout this album and that one, a spark o' interest is evident. Perhaps I may have missed something ? Thanks again folks.

Slayer.... I remember hearing them for the first time in 1986 with the song "Jesus Saves" on some very independent radio station D.J'd by those whose careers in the radio industry didn't go much beyond that. I had two friends back then who were mesmerized by them. They definitely peaked my interest with the great "Reign In Blood", but I just couldn't get into them with their earlier efforts. I wasn't even the devoted church goer, but I just couldn't get into the "Satan" this, "Satan" that...I had gotten "Show No Mercy" on tape, and passed it off to my buddy.
I would go onto get "South of Heaven" and "Seasons In The Abyss", which were great albums. I never cared much more for "Divine Intervention" or "Undisputed Attitude", but thought that the group hit their mark on "Diabolous in Musica". Then came "God Hates Us All", which pushed me further away from the band, and "Christ Illusion" was just not my thing. I did decide to listen to "Hell Awaits" today, which I haven't listened to in forever. Though I don't care for the lyrical content, I can't deny how good the music is on there. I enjoyed listening to "Hell Awaits", "At Dawn They Sleep", and "Necrophiliac".

Slayer's OK. One of those bands that I really have to be pissed off in order to enjoy.

One of the things I love about Slayer (that nobody ever mentions), is that you can understand every lyric Tom sings...without having to consult the lyric sheet...not a whole lot of thrash/death bands you can say that about.
plus, in case anyone has forgotten.
SLAYER RULES!!!

I listened to Slayer's 'Hell Awaits' yesterday for the first time in years, and I loved it. One of the best live bands I have ever seen and have liked all their albums with the expection ' Undisputed Attitude' which I did not care for.

I have four Slayer CDs, here's how I'd rank them:
1. Reign in Blood - a classic, totally awesome, infernal thrash metal through and through
2. Seasons in the Abyss - excellent songs, a big leap up from South of Heaven which I just couldn't get into
3. South of Heaven - the songs are a bit too slow to be thrash, about half the album is forgettable
4. God Hates Us All - a couple of good, infectious Slayer songs, but the rest three quarters seem to be just filler
I've also seen the band live twice. Real high-energy performances both times. Really gets the audience going. I was in the mosh pit the first time. Of course Slayer shows are not meant for fans who want tight playing and flawless solos.
I'd rank Slayer quite high on my list of thrash metal bands. Probably in my top three together with Annihilator and Testament.

Lari, you owe it to yourself to pick up "Hell Awaits". It is every bit as classic as "Reign In Blood", IMO.

Yes, he is Catholic, although I have no idea how religious he really is. He is probably a very open Catholic, though, as opposed to an overly judgmental one.
I have also heard Dave Lombardo is supposedly Catholic as well, although again, I have no idea how religious he is.
