In addition, here's a comment from Ted Jensen, the mastering engineer for Death Magnetic (this copied from the Metallica message board):
Thanks for writing.
I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else. _________________
That's funny because i was thinking after i heard the album that the distortion comes from high volume levels pushed too far like a cheap boom box cranked to the limit.

Or they can do what Nevermore did for their Enemies of Reality record and have it remixed again by Andy Sneap.

Well, according to Jensen's comments it's actually the final mixdown to blame here and not the mastering. This would require more work than usual for a "remastering" job because you'd have to go back to the multi-tracks.
Regardless, this CD is DEFECTIVE. I'm going to call Warner Bros. directly and complain.
What should be done is to remix the session and make it available as lossless downloads via the Metallica website for those of us who already purchased the disc.
Unfortunately the vinyl version of the album was produced from the very same mixdown so it's got the distortion as well (even though it's supposed to not be quite as severe).

So... I'm a dummy when it comes to mixes. Is the album's sound on purpose or is this an actual screw-up (meaning free "corrections" to those who already bought it)?
I'm asking because I plan on buying it Wednesday. Should I hold out for some kind of re-pressing?

I liked it and the sound didn't bother me much (except the drums, although they reminded me somewhat of Justice). No complaints from me, I am happy with this album and for the first time in 13 years I am a Metallica fan again.

I have had this cd in the car all weekend and have now heard it 3 times completely through and i am liking it more each time I hear it. I like the instrumental track (Suicide and Redemption) a lot. Peace.

Metallica Is Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I swear from the first song I had a HUGE shinola eating grin on my face. I'm only three songs into it (I will listen to the rest later, after I relax) but it is more than worth the price I paid (<$10 @ Wal-Mart) for it. To me St. Anger sounded like a desperate attempt to regain old fans. IMO it seems that they thought all they had to do was speed it up and lay back on the production and we'd come crawling back. This time it sounds like they actually made an honest attempt to reach out to old fans and the result was much, MUCH better. The production (as usual) does not mean much to me but I do have one minor complaint. Is there or is there not any bass in this? I couldn't hear any. Robert Trujillio is one of the best bass players I ever layed ears on and should be a highlight of this album but it's almost non-existent thus far.
The bass is there! It's lower in the mix on some songs, but there.
I finally started to hear it in Cyanide. I probably would have heard bass in the songs before it, but the drums kind of drown it out (starting to listen to it again, and while I like it, the drums can be pretty distracting). One thing I was worried abut was Unforgiven III because I love the first one. Unforgiven II sounded like they took the orgional and gutted it out until it was a shell of it's former self. The third one is a completly different song and is quite enjoyable. Even if one hated Unforgiven they might like or at least tolerate this one.

I'm kind of disappointed that the solo in the trailer never showed up on the album. Also, that ballad they had James singing in the clips sounded good. Wonder what happened to that one?
Anyway, check this out. This girl rules!

They sound much better. That's raw. I think I like "Flamingo" better than "All Nightmare Long." In fact, it's much slow, grooves more, and it's almost got me convinced that all they did was speed it up in Pro Tools before James recorded vocals.
