Writing credits mean nothing. That could simply be the bass lines. Did he ever written more than five complete songs?

That new song seems pretty good. Can't tell much, though, since it doesn't sound great. Plus James just isn't a great live singer. Good to see Lars doing something a bit more interesting behind the kit.

This video is a little longer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5rFjCR9NeI

Definitely not like the early stuff. It sounds like a mix of the Load/Reload stuff with a little black album mixed in.
Still gotta hear a studio version, though. It did seem a bit disjointed.

Interesting. There's definitely a return to playing around with time, more complex than anything they've tried in awhile (no Bob Rock standing over their shoulder). I really like the mid-section during and right after the guitar solo.
I LIKE disjointed! It's the endless boogie-groove stuff that was driving me crazy. (don't get me wrong, I love boogie-groove, just not with Metallica doing it)

I am in the minority perhaps ?
My walking away from Metallica came before Justice was released. Guess seeing them from the inception when they were "still" an El Lay band kinda/sorta burned me out on the whole sound.
Since I havn't purchased a new Metallica lp since "Puppets". my comments regarding anything afterwards isn't appropriate due to lack of knowledge.
I havn't listened to any clips posted of the forthcoming release cause I wanna give my ears the finished product ala' virgin. I have been waiting more than 22 to give this band a second chance. An open mind and no pre-conceived notions are gonna jade my enjoyment or lack there of. Metallica is what they are now and it is a virtual impossibility for them to be what they used to be, IMHO.
I only wish them the best...
In a only interesting to me scenario...I would enjoy seeing a reunion of Dave, James, Lars, and Ron play at some seedy club somewhere on The Basin. An entire show of covers !

Disjointed works, but the sound quality of that clip is playing against it, I think.

I LOVE the chorus - It's so cool - And you can hear a clear studio-version in the trailer - That, to me, has some Load-ReLoad sound to it, but it is certainly heavier, longer, and the solo blows any solo on Load/ReLoad out of the water (except for maybe the "Fuel" solo)!!

The solo in the trailer clip is definitely sweet. But is the solo from the same song?

When I look at that list, it's amazing that most of my fave metallica songs are on there.

No, he was not credited for simply writing basslines.
Cliff Burton, a student in music theory, was largely responsible for a lot of the melodic and harmonized guitar parts found on both Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning, which just happen to be their two best albums.
From James Hetfield himself:
On the importance of Cliff, the musical genius: Hetfield:
We never would have written guitar harmonies or instrumentals or songs with very intricate melodies and orchestrations without Cliff. We wouldn't be where we are today.

You have no idea what he was credited for. Cliff suggesting they do guitar harmonies is not writing a song.

I think it's definately a cross between the Black album and Reload, well at least this particular song. It's good to see Kirk back to playing solos, even if it's the same wah variety.

Well if Cliff's name appears under a particular song, and the song happens to have melodic/harmonic parts to it, there's a pretty good chance it was Cliff's.
Notice that virtually every song Cliff is credited for has either melodic (acoustic or clean) parts, or harmonized guitar parts.
Here's some examples of what Cliff's contributions may have been:
Fight Fire with Fire (melodic acoustic intro/harmonized guitar bit after solo)
Ride the Lightning (harmonized guitar intro/harmonized guitar solo)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (harmonized guitar/bass intro & harmonized lead section in the middle of the song)
Fade to Black (acoustic parts/guitar harmonies in the middle and towards the end of the song)
Creeping Death (the guitar harmony which follows the last chorus)
Master of Puppets (clean & harmonized guitar middle section)
Orion (intro bass & mid-section which features bass & harmonized guitars)
Damage Inc. (intro)
And even if Cliff never picked up a six-string guitar in his life, which is highly doubtful, but just stood around saying, "James, you play this. And Kirk, while James is playing that, you play this." Guess what? That means Burton wrote that particular part of the song, not James or Kirk.

Yeah, not what I was expecting after all their talk of going "old school", but still an enjoyable, preferred and welcomed sound over anything from St. Anger.
