Recently, I sold about 80 cd's and have another 80 or so to sell. I basically went through my whole collection and realized there were so many albums I'd never listen to again/care for, so they got the axe. It's been good considering the 1000+ cd's I have and many good ones I just have not given much time. Plus, I have considerably trimmed down my want list, so I hope this helps. I'm glad there are others with the same problem as I have.

Eyesore, I still can't believe you have purchased over 400+ albums this year, or you MC666 with your 200+. I'd say I've puchased 50 or so this year, which is more than enough for me.

I have two methods:

(1.) I always binge on certain albums at given times. For periods anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, I'll listen daily to the same albums, sometimes more than once in a day. I'd say this makes up about half to three quarters of what I listen to.

(2.) I basically randomly select albums, or, at least, according to a genre that I might feel like listening to.

I think I bought about four-hundred a year for the last 3-4 years, but this year I've cut way down on buying, maybe ten (I make truck payments with that money).
But as far as listening I have most of the CD's that I like programmed into (my idea of) genres for random play, so I just pick a genre and a song is picked for me randomly within the genre. I have about 30 genres with between 25 and 150 CD's in each, and they play like little theme radio stations (Power Metal; Classic Hard Rock, Doom, etc.). It's fun, because I know pretty much what I'm gonna get, but not exactly.
If there is something specific or new I want to listen to, I usually listen to that in the car.

I've done 270 already this year and have another 20 in the post so dont feel alone when it comes to obsessive CD buying. Part of this is because the strong Australian dollar has made online buying very attractive, and I've also found a couple of sales in local shops where i've picked up 50+ discs at a pop for a few bucks each Smile.

However I now have these piles of Cd's surrounding the stereo and not enough time to give them the attention they need. I have started to wonder if 'enough is enough'.

Does anybody else ever feel that the obsession can start to outway the enjoyment?

I'm already there. I'm considering getting rid of alot of stuff just to get things down to a manageable level.

For me their is not a life outside metal 🤘 .
Anyway, i buy a lot too but i think i know my collection alright. Nowadays i make a 10 cds/lps play list a week. Albums i didnt listen for some time and during that week i have to play those albums at least 2 or 3 times each. Beside that i listen to new stuff i get in my collection and to other lps and cds too of course. But at least like that, 10 records of my collection a week i will play more then ones and like that i will know them better.

I don't really care about having too many CDs. Even if I have some I've barely heard, it just means that when somebody recommends it to me I can just listen to it rather than have to go out and buy it, seeing as I'd already have it.

Exactly. I see my collection as (or growing into) a library of sorts. I don't even like some of the stuff I own, but I keep it for reference and such.

Yes, i totaly agree. Still, when i dont like a cd at all, i try to trade it to get back maybe something i like more. Like that you clean your collection a little. Take care.
