| I got tickets to see Metallica, Apocalyptica, and a couple more bands next month here in Tucson.
Normally I would not have cared, but my son has been getting into their early stuff, and he wanted to see them. Hopefully they will have a good amount of older songs mixed in.
Last time I saw them was when they opened up for Ozzy on their Master of Puppets tour.

| They started with Creeping Death, then played For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Not in order, here are the rest of the songs, as far as I can remember:
Creeping Death For Whom the Bell Tolls Sad But True Master of Puppets Fuel Enter Sandman And Justice For All Fade to Black Battery Maybe one or two more songs from the Black album or later
1st encore Something One Maybe one more
2nd Encore Four Horsemen Seek and Destroy
No new songs. They said a new album would be out in September (I think).
Apparently it was the largest concert in Tucson in 30 years at 25,000 people.
I went with my brother-in-law.
During the band right before Metallica (Scars on Broadway, which is some members from System of a Down, but not the main singer), we made our way through the crowd and got to a reasonable spot, center stage and not too far away. We probably waited close to an hour for Metallica to start. As soon as they did we got separated, which is no biggie. I basically stayed where I was, and slowly got closer as the crowd shifted around. I got into the older songs (pre-black album) and stood there for the later songs. The crowd was a little odd to me. Tons of people, but not a lot of headbanging or thrashing around. Little pits opened up here and there, but nothing really big or full. Tons of weed-smoke in the air. I got one elbow in the eye while trying to help someone get up onto the crowd. It wasn’t a hard hit, but it was my eye, so that sucked.
Overall I had a good time and was happy about going.
One thing that struck me as odd was as soon as they finished, the people started chanting “one, one, one”. I was like, “one?” I got nothing against that song, and I like it, but I thought it was silly and Metallin00bish. Maybe I am just old. I thought, “probably all these kids who have Guitar Hero III”.
I was disappointed that they didn’t play Whiplash. My voice got pretty thrashed, and part of the reason was me yelling “Whiplash”.
I was really disappointed at one point when James was talking from stage. I think he was thanking or congratulating us (or whatever) for supporting “Heavy Music”. I don’t remember exactly what the context was, but as he was speaking I clearly expected him to say “…heavy metal”. To me it almost seemed awkward and obviously deliberate. It’s sad when a band called METALlica will not make reference to metal. Sad But True.
My wife and son came late, because he had a party for the 8th graders, since it’s their last year at the school. I didn’t see them. They left early and avoided the horrible traffic. It took us 2 hours to get out of the parking lot. I was so thirsty. That sucked.
The band lineup was: Chiodos Flowbots Apocalyptica Scars on Broadway Metallica
I tried to get there for Apocalyptica, but the traffic arriving was so bad that we missed their whole set.. Scars on Broadway might have been ok, but they annoyed me with their left-wing liberal lyrics and frequent reference to doing drugs in their lyrics and between songs. Their music is only ok IMO, so I pretty much didn’t care.
I didn’t even investigate shirts, but my wife did, and tells me they were like $35. Lame.

| Glad they are playing a lot of older songs. Gives me hope for a future release. I've always liked the song "Fuel". _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| Nice report! Great that they played mostly old material. Too bad they were PC about saying "Heavy Metal". - Quote :

It was a "gateway" song for me (as concerns Metallica). Ironicallly, I don't care for most of the rest of AJFA but that song got me into Ride The Lightning and MOP. It's also now 20 year old song. Imagine that!!! How time flies.

| That's actually a pretty decent set list for them these days...but why is "The Unforgiven" so high up in the running order? Gack! Talk about a momentum killer. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

Lars needed a rest after all 3 of those "fast" songs. |

Lars needed a rest after all 3 of those "fast" songs. Good guess. That's probably not to far off the mark.

| I guess One is a song that is special to a lot of fans. But to some of us old farts who started out with Kill Em All and were full on fans of what Metallica was, One was the beginning of the end. It's a good song on an ok album, but it became much more than that. They made a video, played that music awards show... they got the taste of wealth and fame, and just couldn't get past that. The Black album is the evidence for that theory.
I am not trying to whine about it. They can do as they please, and people can like their music. There are plenty of good metal bands out there for me to enjoy.

I get everything you're saying, of course. It's hard for all of us when bands that we started out with change directions. Now that I'm older and can look back on things I can certainly see how all those One factors would create bad feelings. IN FACT, I remember distinctly the "water-cooler" talk in the hallway before homeroom bell rang as a High School Freshman. I heard the whispers of "they sold out" and "posuers" constantly when One came out. The older kids who'd been into metal longer had the exact experience you did. They didn't like the idea of their band getting so popular with us snot-nosed noobs. I thought they were foolish then. As I got older I started doing the same thing!!

Truthfully, the whole setlist was somewhat momentum killing. For me, the following section lacked excitement: Fuel For Whom the Bell Tolls The Unforgiven AJFA Sad but true The Memory Remains That's a long lack of momentum. Bell is an ok song, but weak when compared to most of their early stuff. AJFA is ok, but it's a long song with not much excitement. Still, I was thankful for those two songs. Fade, Master and Battery was obviously a great stretch. The first encore was ok. I like One, and Sandman is tolerable, but overall, meh. The last encore was good, but those may be my two least favorite songs on Kill em all. I wish they had played Whiplash.
