One of the greatest bands to grace the planet IMO.

Every time I hear that song it reminds me of how underrated Brian Downey was as a drummer.

They very first album I ever owned I got as a gift. It was Johnny The Fox in 1976. I heard it the other day for the first time in 30 years. All I can say is wow.

Brian Downey is in my top ten favorite drummers / influences and this was a great band to grow up with. You know back when it was just rock and roll. Nowadays, I guess you'd have to put them in a genre like Irish Rock or something and then Lord forbid.....you put them on a wrong list.

Every once in a while I get some angry Thin Lizzy fan writing to me about my web site because I have described them as "heavy metal". I guess calling anything Thin Lizzy related "heavy metal" is a bad thing to some fans. However, there is no doubt that Phil took Thin Lizzy into that direction in the 70's.

Love all eras of this band, but I am particularly fond of the early, Eric Bell years.

Yeah i can see where their coming from because such a brilliant band like Thin Lizzy is better than simplistic labels like 'Heavy Metal'. I never doubt the Heavy Metal in Thin Lizzy but to me that was one of many elements that made up their fantastic sound. It's a similiar thought i have with Aerosmith as well.

What a great song. I really need to check Thin Lizzy out. I only know the stuff played on the radio, but this song was really good. What is the best album to start with.

Get Jailbreak and Johnny the Fox (they compliment each other quite well) and for one of the best live albums ever, imho, grab Live and Dangerous. Enjoy.

A friend of mine got married over the weekend (March 1). "Shawn Of Fire," if you're reading, it was Tony (aka "Dio"). The wedding was great, and lots of folks showed up, including members of WIDOW, TWISTED TOWER DIRE and other local bands. "Dio" is a huge THIN LIZZY fan, and after the wedding/reception was over, a local club threw "Dio" a huge party. One of our friends, Danny, knew how much of a LIZZY fan "Dio" is and decided to assemble a "hired gun" 4-piece THIN LIZZY tribute band in his honor. Ironically, "Dio's" wife is named Sarah (a LIZZY song, too cool, right?) and their wedding song was "Sarah." Danny used to tour with SIDEWINDER at the turn of the 90's and is a phenomenal guitarist. He got Brian Quast (drummer of URGE OVERKILL) and a guy named T.R. (manager of the local Sam Ash) as the other guitarist. They then flew in a guy named Mony (sp?) from New Jersey (who happened to be in a LIZZY tribute act years ago) who served as Phil Lynott. Mony was the spitting image of Lynott, and it was no costume! He just looks that way, and his voice sounds just like Phil...unbelievable!! Danny, Brian and T.R. practiced as a unit only twice before this show, and since Mony was already in a LIZZY tribute band before, he was ready to go without even rehearsing with them before that day. Before leaving the reception, I requested for Danny to make sure they included "Waiting For An Alibi" for me (love those harmonized guitars). During the 4-5 hour waiting period following the reception and before the show, the band ran through about 10 songs together.
A few hours later, I arrived at the club in anticipation. After socializing some, the guys were geared to go. I, and all who were there, were completely blown away!! They were astonishing!! It was like seeing THIN LIZZY in their prime. This ranks up there with my seeing THE MUSICAL BOX in '97 (Gabriel-era GENESIS tribute). They played for nearly 2 hours! They basically played the majority of "Live And Dangerous" with a few others, mostly the 1974-79 stuff. Check out the set list...
Jailbreak Angel Of Death Are You Ready Angel From The Coast Emerald Cowboy Song Southbound Soldier Of Fortune Suicide Johnny The Fox Waiting For An Alibi Still In Love With You Don't Believe A Word Warrior It's Only Money Rosalie Massacre Sha La La Dancing In The Moonlight Freedom Song Got To Give It Up Cold Sweat The Boys Are Back In Town
I kid you not...23 songs!! Danny and T.R. are just killer guitarists, and they pulled off the dual attack in seemingly flawless fashion. They are all huge THIN LIZZY fans, so that made it that much easier for them to do in the first place. Danny also plays in a LYNYRD SKYNYRD tribute band with Jason Patterson (current CORROSION OF CONFORMITY drummer). Danny told me that he was at a guitar show in South Carolina a couple of weeks ago and got to play the actual guitar that Gary Moore used on "Black Rose." He got a picture taken of him playing it (how cool, right?). I hope they can assemble this group of guys to do this THIN LIZZY tribute one more time at some point. IT RULED!!

Wow! Great set list. "Angel of Death" is such a killer and underrated Thin Lizzy song. One of the local DJs for the Clear Channel rock station is a Lizzy fan and plays that song from time to time.

I LOVE Thin Lizzy. Phil was a total legend. It's easy to forget that he was only 36 when he passed away, it was such a young age considering the amount of great music he's released.
I'll always have a soft spot for this song:
An Róisín Dubh (Black Rose)
Thers's some excellent footage and interviews of Phil on youtube. He was a great character, the type of guy you'd love to be able to go and have a few pints with.

Thin Lizzy is, as far as I'm concerned, the Beatles of Seventies hard rock/ heavy metal (second only to Zepplin). They were an extremely versatile rock group that could play all different kinds of music if they wanted to.
They could do power pop (like "The Boys are Back in Town"), folk rock ("Whiskey in the Jar"), and even straight up Zeppelin-style heavy metal ("Rocker").
Also, I'm a sucker for conceptual bands, and Thin Lizzy had quite a few concept albums.

Thin Lizzy one of my favorite bands, Phil Lynott one of the few true rock poets, one hell of a bassplayer and great song writer, pioneers of twin lead guitars, great story teller (Black Rose), happened to release one of the greatest live albums (Live and Dangerous), why these guys never made it as big as Aerosmith or Bad Company in the States is a mystery to me. I can't say enough good things about Thin Lizzy, but was one of the few bands that was embraced by both punks and metal heads in the 70's. When you get both Johnny Rotten and Bon Scott to agree on something musicial you know your band is special.
