Now i'm not one who is crash hot on albums releasing covers albums, but if anyone would get me to go out and buy one then it would be the wonderfully twisted Wildhearts. Here's the press release:
The Wildhearts release "Stop Us If You've Heard This One Before" Vol 1 digitally on 19th May 2008.
The 12 track album is a collection of covers from some of The Wildhearts favourite bands and will be available exclusively to download worldwide from all major (and not so major) digital stores.
The track listing is as follows:
1. Unsung (Helmet) 2. The World Comes Tumblin' (The Distillers) 3. Understanding Jane (The Icicle Works) 4. Waiting Room (Fugazi) 5. Geez Louise (The Unband) 6. Ice Hockey Hair (Super Furry Animals) 7. Rocket 69 (The Lee Harvey Oswald Band) 8. Possum Kingdom (Toadies) 9. Rearrange You (Baby Chaos) 10. Pep Talk (The Descendents) 11. Battleship Chains (Georgia Satellites) 12. Carmelita (Warren Zevon)
"Stop Us..." will mark the first time that each member of the band has taken on lead vocal duties on a Wildhearts release.
Really interesting track listing, love the choice of the Unband. That song originally had me thinking it was like the Wildhearts covering Motorhead. And cool to see the Georgia Satellites and Fugazi covers aswell.
Maybe would have liked to see Replacements, Jason & The Scorchers, Manic Street Preachers etc covers but that would have been predictable, and the Wildhearts are anything but predictable!

Hmmm, I only recognize about 3 songs out of that track listing. That kinda makes it tough to appreciate a cover album.
I would like to hear their take on "Battleship Chains" though.

Yeah true but it's also a good way to introduce you to some great bands you may never have heard of.
Guns N' Roses Spaghetti Incident was a big influence on my want to seek out the originals and introduced me to some great bands that shaped my music taste to this day.
Do you know the Unband?

Ahh one of the old guard.
You know i like the tangible format as much as anyone but i think with a covers album that was just cocked up in the studio fairly quickly i think the download is appropriate.
And it looks like there is more to come, considering this is titled Vol 1. They might have 4-5 of these, so i don't think they want to flood the market with excess plastic. It's just something extra for the diehards, the download format seperates it from regular Wildhearts releases.

I may still have a copy of The Unband's Retarder cd for trade if someone is interested. I can't remember if I sold it off or it's still in my "trade/sell" box.
EDIT: I too want a real product to hold in my dirty little hands. I hate download-only releases.

Well tomorrow i'm going to see the Wildhearts live....stoked as, can't believe they are making the trek down to Oz for the first time.
Not sure how many will turn out, probably 150 crazies and thats about it considering their a word of mouth band here and probably everywhere. They never got distrubution down here despite being on an Australian label! If they got a push down here they would of gone alright considering the minor commercial success the like minded Urge Overkill got back in the day.
Anyway i'll be heckling them "Play Schitzophonic"!
Also they better play 29X The Pain as well......"Here, sitting in my room, With the Replacements and Husker Du".....describes my life so well.

I bet they play 29x The Pain.
That one is on the The Works comp and based on the liner notes (skimpy as they are), that one sound like a Ginger favorite.

29x the Pain is a huge fan fave....it's grown a whole cult of its own over the years.
It's such a great stoked celebration of Ginger's influences and the greatness of music, this off the top of my head is the bands referenced in the song......
Replacements, Husker Du, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Ramones, The Damned, Sex Pistols, Starz, Kiss, Big Black, Jason And The Scorchers, The Clash, Cheap Trick, Heart, Twisted Sister, Blue Oyster Cult, Nirvana (First Version), Manic Street Preachers (Second Version), Queen, Stiff Little Fingers.....and i think that's all, might be missing one or two.

Eh, I'm not feeling it. I guess I've grown more accustomed to Ginger's gentler side displayed on Year Of The Fan Club and Ghost In The Tanglewood.
His return to the punkier sound of The Wildhearts just doesn't sit right with me. And this isn't even the same sound as early Wildhearts like Earth Vs; this is way more raw - like a hybrid between his Mutation stuff and the Wildhearts.
It's not a bad song but it's just too rough-sounding to me
I guess it's the same problem I have with "The Renaissance Men" album. I tried listening to that one again a few days ago and what I originally thought were production issues I think is actually an issue I have with the music itself. It's too "metal-ly" and not what I've come to expect from a Ginger Wildheart project - unless we're talking about one of his "alter-ego" ones like Mutation.
I want more of the power-pop Ginger not this metal-wannabe Ginger. Of course, he's entitled to do whatever he wants but if this is going to be the sound of his projects going forward I think I'm going to bail.

Do the Wildhearts really have a sound, though? They've been here before. Yeah, it's more raw, which I guess lends itself to a more "metal" sound, but I don't think it's drastically different. Still pretty close to the center of the Wildhearts universe, so to speak.
