I just purchased the album Focus by Cynic, and it is a very challenging listen. I can't bring myself to a full listen, though its short at only 36 minutes. Has this ever happened to you guys, cause i heard all praise this album garnered and i thought i might as well give it a try.
As of right now, its difficult to *enjoy*. Anyone had/has that feeling in regards to this album?

Some of my favorite albums didn't blow me away right away. This is one of them. Brilliant album.
Another one is "Awaken the Guardian". Wasn't impressed at first, but now is one of my all-time faves.

It took a while until I could digest this, but it's worth it.

Heard the album Focus 10 years ago while in college. Thought it was pretty different and good. Very good stuff - takes a few listens to really appreciate it.

I think it's those vocals that give it its charm, imo.

The music is good, but I don't like his voice.

Focus wasn't challenging for me as much as Traced in air or carbon based anatomy were, The vocals rule and sound unlike anything else in my opinion. Focus has the best mix of the experimental to catchy and heavy riff sides of the band.

As far as the new track....I don't understand why Paul Masvidal dosn't just keeps Cynic the way it was with the original vocal style. Even a mix of clean and death vocals like Traced in Air would be better. If I wanted to hear this side of him I would just listen to his other project Aeon spoke.

Close your eyes and pretend it's Aeon Spoke.

Haha. This new tune is way heavier than Aeon Spoke anyway.

Hi I am new here ( really new and I did not find any post to introduce myself ). I am 44, from Brazil , huge fan of metal ( Priest, Saxon, Maiden, Savatage, Motorhead, meshuggah, old and latest queensryche, etc ) and prog rock ( my avatar is taken from the cover of hatfield And the North s/t cover.
I love Cynic "Focus" but could not get into the last albums because they lack the heaviness of Focus although they have this omnipresent experimental/jazzy atmosphere common to all their works, except the demos ( I remember the band made them available at their old web site ).

Focus was progressive death metal. The new stuff is progressive metal with some death metal vocals.
Welcome, by the way! =)
