"National Lampoon's Animal House" (1978)
It's 1962 at Faber College, and the pledges of Delta Tau Chi get caught up in the ongoing battle between the slovenly, hard partying frat bro's and the school's exasperated Dean Wormer, who wants to kick Delta House off campus for good. Wacky hijinks ensue. "Animal House" made a ton of money, turned John Belushi (who totally steals the movie) into a legit film star, and inspired countless low budget teen-sex-comedy imitations. It was considered controversial and excessively raunchy in its day, but while its edges have been dulled by the passage of time, it's still great fun, full of gags and endlessly quotable bits.

"The One" (2001)
An L.A. police officer (Jet Li) has been targeted for elimination by his "evil twin" - a version of himself from another universe, who's been tripping across dimensions and murdering each of his "other" selves in order to absorb their life forces and achieve cosmic powers...or something like that. Obviously, much butt is kicked and lots of things crash and explode. The plot of this sci-fi actioner is total comic book nonsense (props for using the "multi-verse" hook waaaay before there was an MCU, though!) but the action scenes are impressive (esp. Jet's climactic fight against "himself") and the whole thing moves so fast that you don't really have time to think about how silly it is till it's all over. Nothin' special, just a fun popcorn action flick.

I watched “Nobody” starring Bob Odenkirk on HBO.
Very entertaining movie. He kicked more ass than Rambo!

"And Now For Something Completely Different" (1971)
Monty Python's first theatrical release is essentially a "highlight reel," re-creating some of the best sketches from the first two seasons of "Flying Circus" for the big screen. Includes the "Lumberjack Song," the "Dead Parrot Sketch," "Hell's Grannies," "The Upper Class Twit of the Year," and more. Â This movie was the Pythons' introduction to U.S. audiences; Â "Flying Circus" didn't begin airing on American TV till 1974. I can only imagine what American movie-goers must have thought when they saw this! Fun fact: the film was a production of Playboy Enterprises. Â Victor Lownes, an American who was in charge of the London Playboy Club and Casino, fell in love with "Flying Circus" while living in England and brought the Pythons to Hef's attention.

I remember almost getting into a fist fight at school arguing with a kid who told me Saturday Night Live was the funniest show in history and he thought Flying Circus was dumb. SNL had its moments but it certainly wasn't as consistently funny as MPFC.

I like vintage SNL and Python about equally.
Have you ever seen "All You Need Is Cash," Eric Idle's mock "rockumentary" from 1978 about the "Rutles?" It's pretty much "Spinal Tap" before there was "Spinal Tap." It's my favorite non-Python project by any of the MP alums, and since it was produced by SNL honcho Lorne Michaels, many of the classic SNL cast members make cameos in it (John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, etc.) so it's the best of both worlds

"Trick" (2019)
An FBI agent (Omar Epps of "House") leads a bunch of small town cops in pursuit of an unknown masked killer called "Trick," who only strikes once a year - on Halloween night (sound familiar?). I bought this DVD at Dollar Tree on a whim, based on some of the names involved (director Patrick Lussier of "Drive Angry," which I loved, and the fine "My Bloody Valentine" 3D remake, and the always-welcome Tom Atkins of "Halloween III" fame). I kept my expectations low, which actually kinda worked in "Trick's" favor; it certainly isn't dull -- it starts piling up bodies from the get-go and keeps the ultra-violence moving swiftly through most of the run time. Like most post-"Scream" slasher flicks, there's a mid-point "plot twist" that most viewers will see coming from a mile away, and it drags on a little longer than it really needs to, but overall I was entertained. I can't really complain for the price I paid for it anyway...

The entire staff of a summer camp has been killed by a masked maniac. The lone survivor holes up in a cabin and calls his best friend (Alyson Hannigan of "Buffy" and "How I Met Your Mother"), who works in a comic book/video store and is therefore an expert in such matters, for help. Together the pair work through the events of the previous evening's mayhem and eventually come to the conclusion that ... he might be the murderer, acting under the influence of a possessed mask that he found in the forest. This witty, gory parody of "Friday the 13th" style summer camp slashers lovingly skewers all the genre's cliches. As horror spoofs go, it's not as laugh out loud hilarious as, say, "Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil," but it's certainly a cut (pun not intended) above crap like the "Scary Movie" series. Well worth the buck and a quarter I paid for the DVD at Dollar Tree.

Godzilla Vs. Desroyah (1995)
The last film in the Heisei series of Godzilla films, this one deals with Godzilla on the brink of nuclear meltdown contending with a creature evolved from the original oxygen destroyer used to destroy the original Godzilla 40 years prior. A typical fun monster fest from Toho, with the usual monster action you would come to expect. Although this is another film with an inspired monster to fight the Big G, but poorly executed in the end, with a monster impossibly huge and not greatly rendered by the sfx department.

I agree. I like the concept behind Destroyah but you don't really see him very well and when you do it's kind of a mess.

A classic revenge tale, but done very well IMO. The young prince has his inheritance stolen, and vows revenge on the perpetrator. It's a slow-burn of a movie, so don't expect non-stop action and slaughter. When the time for violence does arrive, it's swift and BRUTAL. The cast all do a great job, and director Robert Eggers knows what he's about. Very enjoyable film.

Diving back into my pile of Dollar Tree DVDs:
"Satanic Panic" (aka "Panic," 2019)
A pizza delivery girl's last run of the evening takes her to a swanky estate in a wealthy neighborhood, where the residents are all members of a Satanic cult. She arrives in the middle of a ceremony to awaken the dark god Baphomet, and they need a virgin sacrifice in order to make it happen. You can probably figure out the rest. Pizza Girl gets put through the wringer in this very funny, tongue in cheek horror/surivival comedy with a generous amount of splatter. The still-gorgeous Rebecca Romijn is an absolute hoot as the head of the housewife coven, she's like a Satanic Martha Stewart.

Manos Returns (2018)
This is the sequel to the low budget horror movie Manos: The Hands of Fate.
There is also a prequel to Manos: The Hands of Fate, which is titled Manos: The Rise of Torgo.

That has Freddy written all over it. Hands of Fate was soooooo bad I've never even sat through the whole thing in one sitting, not even the various "mocked" versions. Even Joel and the Bots couldn't do much with the original. I can only imagine how bad any other versions of the film have to be.

Yes, I saw the non-MST3K'd version a long time ago, it was pretty painful. Haha

Evil Dead(2013)- a group of friends go to a isolated cabin in the woods for an intervention to help a friend get off drugs. While there, they discover in the cellar the book Naturom Demonto. When one of the friends reads some passages from the book...well, you know the rest. Demonic possession, bodily dismemberment and enough blood and guts to please any self respecting gore hound. This remake or sequel to Sam Raimi's legendary cult classic is a 90 minute ride into hell and brutality, so it has that going for it. Having said that, I knew even before I watched it that they would never top the original even with improved effects and a much bigger budget. As I said, it's got tons of the red stuff and is well done, but I have some minor issues like the characters are underdeveloped and do some dumb things through out the film. This was the R rated version I watched and as gory as it was, I couldn't imagine what was cut out! 2.5/5
