I haven't followed many Christian bands for a while, aside from those that emerged in the 80s and 90s during the salad days of the Christian metal community. Just out of curiosity, are there any bands that have emerged in the past few years that still actually identify with this label/sub-genre?

No doubt there are plenty of Christians playing metal, but I'm mostly wondering if "Christian metal" per-se is even a thing anymore.

I think it's still a thing. Just nothing like it once was.

I think back in the day, a lot of the Christian metal world seemed to follow on the coattails of whatever was popular at the time in the secular world. Not everyone mind you, but a large percentage was marketed as "The Christian version of [Band X]".
Seeing how there isn't as much secular metal lighting the world on fire these days in terms of sales, there isn't much for the Christian metal market to latch onto.
What's popular with the kids these days? Dub step? It that still a thing? Maybe there's a big Christian dub-step movement we're unaware of?

I don't even know what dub-step is, but yes, there are Christian dub-step bands.
As for Christian Metal, not really a lot new other than some of the older bands have plans for upcoming releases including Bride & Scared Warrior with Rey back on vocals. And there are a few new bands playing older style music made up of "classic" musicians.
Roxx Records mainly does reissues but they also have new bands on the label (or if they aren't new I have never heard of them).

Bro, that Christian dub step thing sounds right up your alley.

For a while it seemed that all the new bands were metalcore. Maybe some black metal. I've gotten so bored with it lately. A lot of crappy produced stuff with generic lyrics for the most part.

Galactic Cowboys don't identify as Christian metal. I could be wrong, but I think the only member that is a practicing Christian is Ben Huggins. They have sort of gone the way of King's X.
If there are any lyrics with a Christian perspective, it's a Ben thing...

If there is any modern Christian metal bands, they are definitely not as straight forward "evangelical" as the bands from the 80s and 90s. I don't see any unashamedly Christian Steve Rowe/Mortification style preaching.

There is an intense band called "This Way Up". I think Doug Van Pelt is in it [but he has taken off the ski mask].

I think all the guys are Christians but they never considered GC to be a Christian band. You know, the whole labeling thing.
BioGenesis is another newer band that I think are Christian.

They were all Christian when they started, but some things have changed over the years. I read that Dane is into Buddhism and Monty has said on his podcast that he no longer follows organized religion. Although he did say that he still believes in God. I'm not sure about Alan Doss...

Unfortunately (or not?), the recent Guardian/Whitecross "Revival" EP seems to me to encapsulate the state of Christian Metal at the moment. That is: a crowd funded EP with various members of classic Christian bands re-recording their own songs with worse production and less energy and attitude than they had 30 years ago.
I mean, if you didn't tell me otherwise, I would have thought the re-recorded version of "Never Say Goodbye" was actually some kind of unreleased demo for the actual song on Fire and Love. It's almost embarrassing to listen to.

Your post reminds me of this:
The re-recorded version of Tourniquet's Stereotaxic Atrocities on the Tourniquet/Kirkpatrick all-star mishmash album Onward to Freedom must be one of the more unnecessary re-recordings out there. And I say this with heavy heart, being a superhyper fan of everything Tourniquet and Kirkpatrick.
It kinda also hurts me to know this was Luke Easter's last recording with Tourniquet.
The original song wasn't ever my favorite and it certainly was my least favorite song on Psycho Surgery, but the original at least didn't sound sloppy in any way and had way better energy to it and was way tighter AND Guy Ritter's unique vocals gave it a special edge. Not that Luke's vocals ruins the new version as I think Luke was perhaps the strongest part of that. It's just that it's musically waaaay under the quality of what the original was - and I don't care if there is Marty Friedman laying down the solos. It just didn't work.

I agree with your Tourniquet comment. The guitar is detuned too much, the playing is slower and the vocals don't work... I'm not much of a Luke fan to begin with, but that female backing vocal is really lame! The only interesting thing imo is the Marty solo.
The original is much better. Although it's the weakest song on Psycho Surgery.

Yikes, that re-recording is dreadful! How on earth did they convince Marty Friedman to be a part of it??

$$$$. Marty probably spent 20 minutes tops on it. The man can improv decent solos with little effort.
