It was my 10-year-old's turn to pick a movie. This is what we got: "The Emoji Movie" (2017)
Inside a teenager's cell phone, a trio of non-conforming "emojis" escape from their program and go on an adventure through the digital landscape, visiting various apps and avoiding anti-virus enforcers. This was one of 2017's most critically-blasted movies, and I'd say they had good reason. This isn't a movie, it's a feature-length commercial for Spotify, YouTube, Facebook, etc. It's a nicely animated little dumpster fire but that's about all the praise "The Emoji Movie" will get from me.

The only thing I found remotely interesting about that movie was that Patrick Stewart agreed to be a voice in it. Surely he can't need the money...

Which one of the remaining 4 movies in the Sci Fi Classics collection that came yesterday should I watch next? I've seen them all but it was a long time ago and I only remember bits and pieces from all of them:
1) The Incredible Shrinking Man 2) The Monolith Monsters 3) The Mole People 4) Monster On Campus
I bought this collection for "Tarantula" which I watched last night. The entire collection was cheaper than just buying "Tarantula" by itself and since it's 5 movies on 3 DVDs the transfers aren't like that compressed crap that Freddy finds in cutout bins. The "Tarantula" print was darn near pristine.

Yup, he's the "poop" emoji. Apparently in spite of his cultured image, Sir Patrick has a fairly low-brow sense of humor in real life.

It's been a super hero film fest for me this weekend.
Friday night I watched Thor:Ragnarok (excellent) and Justice League (OK but better than I expected it to be).
Saturday I went to the theater to watch Black Panther (excellent film) and then caught X-Men:Apocalypse (good but I expected better) on HBO On Demand.

Took my son on Saturday to see:
Black Panther
I thought it was a very good film. I also give it bonus points for actually intelligently confronting political and social ideals. The comments I've seen online that accuse the movie of being a SJW vehicle completely miss the point made by the film.

"Zombieland" (2009)
A nervous nerd, a tough guy and two con-artist sisters make their way across a zombie-ravaged USA on their way to a fabled undead-free zone in California in this cult classic horror comedy. I've seen this one a bunch of times and it never gets old.

^^^^ Excellent (and humorous) cameo by Bill Murray in that one.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who thought Zombieland was dumb. The cameo with Murray was definitely the highlight.

"Deep Red" (1975)
A British musician living in Rome witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic, then teams up with a lady reporter to uncover the killer's identity and stop the string of deaths that follow. Dario Argento's mix of European arthouse visuals and American grindhouse gore is nice to look at but the story becomes a confused muddle pretty quickly. That may be due to the fact that the version I watched was the American "theatrical" cut (1 hr, 40 minutes) -- I'm told that Argento's original Italian release (which is 20 minutes longer) is easier to follow. Either way, "Deep Red" was an entertainingly weird, gory murder mystery.

Rest Stop(2006)-a young couple traveling from Texas to California encounter a psycho truck driver while on the road. After the boyfriend disappears, the girlfriend is left to fend for herself against the killer at a rundown rest stop. The movie is kind of a mix of a slasher film with elements of torture porn and even a little bit of a ghost story thrown in. Overall, a decent time killer. I give it 2.5 out of 5 chainsaws. Review is based on the unrated version.

"Inside Metal: The L.A. Metal Scene Explodes" (2016)
Part 1 of a 2-part documentary about the early '80s metal boom in Los Angeles. Past and present members of Dokken, Stryper, Quiet Riot, Metallica, Armored Saint, W.A.S.P. and many more tell some good stories and reminisce about the good ol' days, interspersed with lotsa vintage concert posters, photos and video clips. I didn't really learn anything new from this doc, but it was a fun trip down memory lane.

That one had such potential but the ending sucked IMO

Bug (1975)
An earthquake unleashes a heretofore unknown species of cockroach-like insects capable of causing items to burst into flames. Bradford Dillman stars as a scientist experimenting on them, making matters worse. Good goofy 70s fun.
