I have spent the last couple of hours [precious "time off of work hours"] calling people on a Saturday afternoon, just to check up and see how shit is going with them.  4 outta 5 don't answer and the other ones sound bored as shit to speak with me for the first time in years.  Why do I even need one of these junkass pieces of plastic and circuits?

My 86 year old mother does, but other than that, not really. I basically keep a land line because of her.

Outside of business, why talk when you can text? The only people I want to actually speak to, I live with.  Human interaction is severely overrated.

I would find it very awkward to live with most of my friends and their families. How big is your house?

I didn't even like talking on the phone before the advent of cell phones/texting. I was one of those guys who would mostly say "Mm-hmm," "yeah," "yup," etc.

I ONLY talk on the phone.

Yep, I'm an old fart.  I will never understand the attraction of "texting".  Why bother typing all that shit out when you could just call the person and say the same thing in a fraction of the time?    Unless you're cheating on a test or contacting someone in a meeting, then it makes sense.

And you texters are on my list!  I had to drive quite a bit to bring my new cat home today and AS USUAL on the highways and biways I had to take to get to PetCo, I ran across several cars who just couldn't stay in their lanes.  And as I passed each potential moving road hazard I glanced over and sure enough EVERY SINGLE DAMN ONE OF THEM WAS TEXTING WHILE GOING OVER 60 MPH!!!!

I swear, if one of you texting dumbasses hits me I will be in jail for assault because I will beat the living crap out you.

I can text all I need to say in seconds. And then avoid all follow up questions. Calling someone takes minutes. Come beat the hell out of me toughguy. PM me for my address.

I prefer texting since it's more impersonal and a person can leave at any time and not have to hold a phone. When I do talk I use earphones with a mic.

Almost the same though. We do have a kid. Doesn't mean I limit my communication to those two people.

Most of my friends have kids (and careers) too, so we don't always get to meet face to face either. When there's a chance for a boys' night out, I agree, just set it up via WhatsApp, and save the yapping to the actual event.

If you want to text from home that's fine, that's your business.

Just don't run into my car on the road because you were so distracted by texting.  That's my point.

It's as if I wrote this!

Guys at work will spend an hour texting back and forth a message that would take 90 seconds on the phone.

A few simple things like: "You get there ok?" I can see or things like: "Grab some diapers" but other than that, full conversations need the nuance of the spoken language. If it was faster, cases in court would be texted back and forth, lectures in class would be texted, dispatchers would text First Responders, etc...but that doesn't happen because it's not faster. Most people are simply addicted to their phones, and they CLAIM it's better to text.

I do limit most of my communication though. Between me and my wife. Everything else is email or text. Unless it' business related.

Yeah those example are fine and make perfect sense.

The people I'm seeing are typing freakin' NOVELS while cruising down the highway at more than 60 mph.  That's when I get pissed.  It's like they think whatever they're typing at that speed outweighs the importance of paying attention to the road and other drivers.  I'm sorry but unless you're the president of the US, that's just not the case.  And probably not even then.

Today on the way back from picking up my new cat I had to literally change lanes without looking because some stupid moron in an SUV was texting away and started veering into my lane.... AT 70 MPH!!!

I prefer talking on the phone but I have found texting is great for short form of communications, like I need milk, or something banal.

My main issue with texting, that is hard sometimes to convey what you are feeling or something may be taken the wrong way because one does not hear the tone of one's voice etc.

Saying all that, I usually text now adays because of work, its sometimes easier.

You're so right, Toho.

We make SO many wrecks where the people were texting. I've had to stop looking at other drivers because I get so infuriated seeing people text and drive.

Some medicine kills one person and every bottle in the nation gets pulled from the shelves to the tune of tens of millions of dollars (as it should) but texting and driving kills 1000s every year and, mostly...crickets. Grrr!!!!

Then you are thankfully one of the sensible few.

Why do you think new vehicles now have "lane departure warning systems"?  Why did we not need this technology before?

Oh yeah, I used to have to drive I95 all the time when I lived in CT.  And that was 20 years ago.  Somehow I don't think it's gotten any better since then.
