Despite hearing various songs by Uriah Heep I have never owned an album by them. Give me some recommendations. Best? Where to start?

Look at Yourself is their definitive album in my opinion. Demons and Wizards is my second favorite. Though, you can't really go wrong with any of their early 70s material.

This. One could say that the debut is very uneven, but with music as experimental as it was back then, that was usually the case. The debut has always been my favorite, followed by Look at Yourself and Salisbury.
For a real kick in the pants, check out the live album. An overlooked gem IMO.

I only have one Uriah Heep album - Abominog - it's their 1982 "NWOBHM sellout" album. Blizzard of Ozz members Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake were on board and wrote much of the material, but the album has ten (!) cover songs on it. The opening track "Too Scared To Run" is a classic:
One of these days I'll pick up a heap of Heep, if you will.

Apparently old Abominog had a son:
Junior's a chip off the old block for sure.

Can't go wrong with any of the first five albums. Probably some good ones after those too, but I haven't gotten around to picking them up yet. I do have a couple recent ones, and they are actually pretty good also. I picked up wake the sleeper and into the wild, and both of those are decent. I would get the older stuff first though, anything with David Byron on it is probably a safe bet that it'll be good.

I own three uriah heep releases: - live in europe 1979 - live in Moscow - on the rebound (a worthy double best of) Basically this is all that i need from the band. Too scared to run, weekend warriors and words in the distance are top tracks imo.

I have a re-release of Abominog with the EP tacked on as a bonus, plus live tracks and a booklet with notes. And I think it only cost $3 or $4 new. It was a department store with a tiny music section, but they happened to have a campaign for classic heavy metal albums.
