| So, I have been reading the latest Classic Rock magazine article about G'NR breaking big back in 1987 in England before coming back and conquering America. At one point Slash mentions meeting his hero, Lemmy, and it made me think of Guns wasn't just another hair band from LA - they were something much different. Their sound and style was shaped by what they grew up listening to that made them "the most dangerous band in the world". So, my question is this- if you had started a band (or were a solo artist if you so desire) back when you were 18, what would it have sounded like? What genre(s) would it have been like?
Thoughout high school I listened to a mix of Traditional/ Glam/ Speed so I would have fallen somewhere in between in between the 3 and probably would have sounded like Leatherwolf or Banshee with a jeans and leather jacket look of Tesla circa 1986. A little of Helloween's speed with some of Megadeth's aggression. By the time I graduated (1992) the musical climate was changing, so I wonder how much my bands sound (hypothetically, of course) would have changed my bands sound. Of course, I was a terrible guitarist, lol, so none of this was ever really going to happen. But the article got me thinking. Anyway, interested in your thoughts HoM. Those who are musicians, what was your first band like? Why did it sound that way? Was it a conscious decision?

| If I had been in a band during high school it probably would have sounded like RTL/MOP era Metallica, because that was pretty much all I listened to 24/7 at that time _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| By the time I was 18 it would have sounded like a cross between Voivod and Joy Division. I wish I had more talent because I would like to hear this, even now! | |

| At 18 it woulda been Thin Lizzy meets Megadeth meets Buddy Guy meets Grant Green. I woulda had too many ingredients in the stew so to speak; pure convolution.
Nowadays it'd be Scott 'Wino' Weinrich meets Lemmy.

| At 17 I had a band and we sounded like shit, but in my head I heard a mixture of Deep Purple, Alice Cooper molested by Metallica and Iggy Pop | |

| Interesting question.
When I was 18 I listened to a lot of what is now "classic rock" (Jethro Tull, Meatloaf and Styx for example) but then I also liked some Celtic stuff like Horslips and also a lot of punk like Ramones, The Clash, The Boys etc.
So throw all that stuff into a blender and I think you'd have gotten an interesting mix from my band. Of course the music would have been too complex for us to play and would have sounded like crap but the idea of trying to blend those styles together would have been fun. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I have no musical ability, other than I can carry a tune decent enough, but if we're talking about a high-school jam band, I'd probably lean towards a biker/dirty gypsy-type vibe. Like GnR, Junkyard, that sort of thing. I wasn't pretty enough to be glam. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| I forgot to mention I played trumpet from 4th grade through high school and I was good at it. My high school of almost 500 students had a competition jazz band that used 3 trumpet players and you had to audition before the school music director to get in. I played in that band all three years in high school. I still have the beer stein the director gave me when I graduated. It has my name engraved on one side and a treble clef engraved on the other side.
So yeah, my band would probably have thrown some horns into the mix as well. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I was in a couple of bands in my younger days. I played drums, still have a set but never play anymore. Anyway, we played a lot of Thrash(surprise, surprise) like Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax etc.If I was to get back into a band now it would be more along the lines of GNR,Spread Eagle type stuff. | |
