I finally explored this last night and I gotta say, I was wrecked. This feels like a more emotional experience than Island and reminds me a lot of Final Cut. Faces of Stone has a crazy Johnny Cash start that just melts into this most macabre waltz. Girl in the Yellow Dress is quite moving in its own vaudevillian way, but I actually prefer the bonus orchestral version.
The way the whole album is composed is thrilling, with little cues and pickups here and there that bounce about, making repeated listens a joy. While On an Island was an enjoyable affair in its own minimalist way, this is slightly more enjoyable in its construction and fluidity, such as with Dancing Right in Front of Me (love that piano solo backed by spurts of bluesy guitar licks).
Easily in my top 10 for this year. The harmonies on A Boat Lies Waiting alone...!
