You do realize half the fun in keeping this rolling is to see which part of my reply is going to drive you to tear out your own hair, right? Laughing

I get what you mean, but we can go round and round about the number of pat blues riffs that have been appropriated for metal songs and say it's all ripping off T-Bone Walker or something like that. Same goes for the "devil's triad" and all that.

To me, it just feels like they were two separate bands who were unfortunately judged negatively against one another. In DC particularly, I see something close to a prototype of the Ripper Owens phenomenon because Whitesnake was kind of a one-hit wonder. He wasn't Zeppelin level famous or anything when he got the call to do the Page collab, so I imagine it was more like working with someone he'd looked up to early on than a, "Gee, how much can I play up these comparisons people make for cash" kind of thing.

That, and I will cop to a personal bias. Plant seems like the kind of guy where, if you were able to hang out with him, he'd be pulling the whole, "I'm too arty and busy pining for the fjord to be properly social," whereas Coverdale seems like someone you could talk records with over a beer.

Violin bow anybody ???

And there are two versions of 80's Whitesnake...

Just listen to the two versions of "Slide It In" and it's a pretty definite line (IMHO)

The 1987 Whitesnake album and Kingdom Come S/T are very similar sounding albums, why would the latter have substantiated Zeppelin clone connotations and the other not ?

A bit of real life stuff here as well.....My very first concert was with Deep Purple on the bill w/ Coverdale. (California Jam April of 1974)  If I had a dollar for how many times I heard some hippie/stoner say "Wow, that dude sounds and acts just like Plant".   I might have been able to buy me that coveted  Schwinn "Grey Ghost" 5-speed.

I remember hearing a story years ago (in those Dark Ages known as pre-internet) that Jimmy Page supposedly laughed his ass off when he saw the violin bow used in the 'Still of the Night' video. There was no way he (Vandenberg? Sykes?) could make those sounds.

There's a reason Plant famously called him "David Cover-Version." Smile
