| If they do something good that's cool, if they do a bad record or one that just doesn't appeal to me I won't, i don't feel betrayed by their experimentation. I actually respect them because when an entity gets as big and important as Metallicorp, the pressure from all directions to make slight variations of the Black Album must have been immense! | |

| A band as big as Metallica...there is no such thing as risk. If they stopped recording & touring now they could live comfortably off royalties for the rest of their multi-millionaire lives. They could release a 3 volume set of polka songs and it wouldn't damage them in the slightest....if they followed it up with Ride The Lightning Part 2 all the supposedly furious fanboys would come right back sniffing their butts like dogs in heat.

I'd kind of like to see them do that. What? It'd amuse me.

If Metallica wanted to get all "artistic" they could have done it under a different name. Why attach an album like that with the likes of Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets? Never thought i'd say this, but LuLu makes the Load albums sound great. Even St Anus sounds better, but not by much... I still hate that one too! I guess when you get rich, you don't care about integrity anymore. But Load/Reload are great.

I'm more inclined to lean on Reload because I heard that one first (if memory serves, it was one of the first CDs I bought with my own money), but agreed.

You're assuming they have the ability to do that.

Doesn't matter if they succeeded or not, the fanboys would still lap it up. |

They could never recapture that magic again. I thought Death Magnetic was a decent step in the right direction, but at this point, I don't think they will ever get much better than that.

| Ride The Lightning was recorded by a bunch of young guys in their 20s who probably didn't have 2 nickels to rub together at the time. Now they are a bunch of multi-millionaires in their early 50s. It would be impossible to recreate the experience now, they are very different people and they've aged 30 years. And Cliff is still dead.

Doesn't matter if they succeeded or not, the fanboys would still lap it up. I'm sure a lot of people would. But the others that have moved on listen to bands that are more consistent and reliable like Overkill, Testament and Slayer.

Yeah, some people have moved on or "matured" from liking metal altogether. Then there are the people that truly love the genre regardless of the aging process and want to occasionally hear something fast and youthful. Just because you get older doesn't mean we all need to hop on our rocking chairs and fade into the sunset with soft rock.

| If you're saying I don't "truly love the genre" you can blow it out your ass. I still listen to metal, when I'm in the mood for it. I treat it like music, not like some religion you have to remain faithful too. That's dogmatic bullshit.

I didn't mention any names but I guess you applied it to yourself. Such hostility... Calm down dude.

| I never said anyone needs to listen to metal 24/7 all the time. I have always listened to different stuff since day one. I just tend to prefer metal music over everything else. To each their own... | |

| I listened to other genres before I got into metal, continued listening to a variety of things even when metal was my primary genre and I've discovered many others in the decades since metal stopped being my primary genre. I've never wanted to be a "metalhead", I'm content being a music fan.
I've actually listened to more metal this year than I have in the last few years. |

I've actually listened to more metal this year than I have in the last few years. I don't label myself anything. I just like metal. I actually can't stand some of the people that I see at concerts. You know those hot topic twerps that parade around in their so-called metal clothes. Don't get me wrong... I'll wear an occasional shirt of a band I like, but I don't like the weirdos that go overboard for attention.

No. The other genres you mention do draw from a much broader palette of sounds, instrumentation and approach, but I don't think "intellectual" has anything to do with it. |

But you've never really been a thrash guy, right? That's the pertinent genre here if we're talking about RtL.

Actually, between '86 and '89 it was my favorite niche of metal. I had a lot of thrash albums in my collection, unfortunately my entire collection was stolen from a storage unit in the early 90s. My favorites: Slayer, Coroner, Megadeth, Overkill, Kreator, Destruction, Nuclear Assault, Whiplash, Death Angel, Possessed, Exodus. Plus "borderline" stuff like Metal Church and Voivod. When the mood strikes I still totally dig it, but it's not a genre I feel the need to collect any longer, what I currently have is sufficient to satisfy my thrash cravings when they come on. |

| Out of that list of bands Coroner and Voivod are the two that I still listen to most often. Slayer is still my go-to music for when I have a shit day and just need to blow off some steam.
